I say if a player is available in a position of need who fits our profile, including of course his age and his qualities, then we take him. The fact that we can't identify or can't attract a player in a different position of need should only affect that decision if the club can only afford one or the other. The guiding principle has to be quality, quality, and patience in acquiring it. Collect top players and top players only. I understand that there are various opinions but from me De Jong is a top player.

If he chooses them over us it’s for several clear reasons.

Playing under his former manager who is also Dutch, earning stratospheric wages that they’ll pay because they’re on their knees begging, and he walks straight into their first XI and is treated like their messiah since they’ve been crying about buying a top midfielder for years.

To us Chelsea supporters it seems insane to choose the current United over us, but those things will clearly appeal to him.
