That means Bonucci, Nainggolan etc. With Baba-JT-Cahill-Ivanovic this relationship will end in tears. But still have to say Italy looked good. LVG has done fuck all on the European stage for god knows how many years, meanwhile Conte is managing an Italy team after 3 successful years at Juventus in which they won consecutive league titles. conte is 20+ years younger, so has time on his side; he still has more developing as a coach I am sure. Even if Conte won the Euros and people said it was a fluke, you can't take away what he did domestically with Juventus, so that proves in itself he is capable to manage at the elite level. Jase 43,479
Conte may have gotten his tactics spot on but let's not forget who's the manager of the team he faced tonight. On top of that, in the midst of all this praise for Conte, people seem to have missed the fact that Italy sat back and played on the break - something people weren't pleased about when we did it under Mourinho - in the second half. Belgium created some good chances which should have been put away. Had one gone in, people's opinion on Conte might have changed. In fact, it's alright that he's getting all the love right now, but what are the odds of fans turning against him if Italy were to suffer a bad result, say against Sweden next? Yeah Belgium had that chance with Lukaku, but on the flip side, Pelle missed that sitter then Courtois made that great save, so it could be flipped to say if those chances are taken, game over before the hour. Like I said whatever happens in this tournament has no bearing on what could happen here, but he got it spot on tonight. Is like if Mourinho takes over a NT and does well, we will not discredit that because we know he can do good with clubs. So I think this time it might be different. Italy played to their strengths. People weren't pleased when Mourinho sat back and played on the break because only some players were interested in playing that way. If every player doesn't buy into the manager's tactics, you get disjointed performances and concede embarrassing goals (like we did this season). Italy may have played on the counter but when they did counter they ended up having 3 or 4 in the box. Thats the difference. This is not the greatest Italian team but it is obvious they have bought into Conte and his ways. Hardly anyone would have predicted that result of 2-0 and you mention Belgium chances but if it wasnt for Tibo, then Italy could have easily had 1 or 2 more as well EMK, MefiX19 and kellzfresh

It's the fact that Italy sat back and played on the break with the 1-0 lead. We did the same under Mourinho and not many liked the approach. Italy could have easily been punished had Belgium not been useless in front of goal. If that had happened, the view on Conte's approach would have likely turned in the opposite direction. 7 hours ago, Tomo said: Like I said whatever happens in this tournament has no bearing on what could happen here No, of course not but one can take a hint or two of what Conte will do when he gets here. 5 hours ago, Rhino's Skin said: Italy may have played on the counter but when they did counter they ended up having 3 or 4 in the box. Thats the difference. No. The difference between Italy and us is that they know how to execute a counter attack. In our case, never mind about getting players into the box, we hardly even get near the box because the players can't make the right decision or play the right pass to save their lives! Superblue 6,372
What impressed me most about last night is how much he got out of what is on paper a very average bunch of players (excluding Buffon and the defence). If England had to make do with the likes of Giaccherini, Eder and Pelle as some of our strongest attacking options (not to mention a player as piss-poor as Borini made their preliminary squad), we wouldn't even qualify for the tournament. I've read a lot about how he took a lot of players to the next level at Juventus, and last night seemed to confirm that. We clearly need 3 or 4 top signings to go into the team, but I have high hopes that Conte can also get more out of some of our squad options and younger players. Cool, and it also makes me a little less concerned with the transfer activity for the club. People are having kittens at the moment because we've yet to splash £30-40m on a player, however (correct me if I'm wrong) I'm sure Conte never spent more than £15m on a player at Juventus and brought some real top drawer players during his time. I can possibly see one or two 'lesser' signings that people aren't overly thrilled about, but they will work within the framework that Conte wants to create. You only have to look at Belgium currently and England a decade ago to know that a hugely talented pool of players doesn't necessarily make a great team. Ryan Fong 2,776
Call me biased because the Italian is our new boss, for me Conte is a better tactician than Mourinho, if not much better. Hope because none of us want to start the new season with the same squad that finished the last one. If that is what happens, if Antonio has to navigate the season with the same options Jose and Guss worked with; then, and only then, we'll get some clues about whether you are right or not. None of us want Antonio to be handicapped like that. Ryan Fong and Muzchap
