Tough to find many (or any) reputable sources for this. Even tougher to imagine given Mourinho's comments that Rooney is the only target remaining for this summer. Essien is sadly past it, Mikel doesn't offer enough, Chalobah is going on loan, and Lamps/Ramires/MvG all like to bomb forward and don't help the defense much. We certainly do need to strengthen there. I guess Jose either doesn't think so or is just not revealing that we're after someone. Hoping for the latter.

He's a B2B midfielder. Nothing special- not particularly physical or technical and is atrocious when near the opponent's box.

We don't need him really, already have Ramires, MVG and Essien who are more than enough for that role.

I think it is too soon to write Essien completely off ! (Lamps , Mikel , Essien , Ramires, David Luiz ) ...With Lamps getting older the CDM role will suit him better

Really doesn't make much sense. He's a great player no doubt, but I can't see why we'd want him unless one or more of our CM's left.

If Mikel is sold I can see it. Lamps will probably leave after the season and Essien won't be here long. Khedira is a solid enough tackler and can break up play, but he still doesn't solve our problem completely.

I am wondering why we are even considering options such as Gustavo and now Khedira, when we reportedly could simply have bagged de Rossi. Just as Gustavo, Khedira would be a slight upgrade on MIkel, but I also rate Ramires higher than both, cos he is a player who does more than what he is supposed to do and actually takes responsibility in the big moments. Khedira does not. he is a good DM, but not the guy you want to have around when the tide turns against you. When Real got raped by Dortmund and ManUtd and completely overrun in midfield, he was completely unable to do anything against it. He is only as good as the players next to him and will never be the one to stand up. De Rossi is the complete opposite. If his team is in danger he will fight tooth and nail to turn it around. That is why he raped the German midfield in any given Italy vs Germany clash. There are good players and there are great players...
