Best overall defender in the league for me. Nearly unbeatable 1 on 1 and positionally phenomenal. Great football brain.

Only weakness is something he can't control which is his size. Like today a few times when Harry Kane was just too big for him physically. you see opposition manager try to isolate their tall strainer on Azpi nearly every week but so far no joy.

I don't think Cesar (Or Luiz, for that matter. Cahill was easily our best defender.) was particularly good today. He should have been the one closing the gap between Matic/Kante and the backline like he has done very well ever since going to a back-3. That space was used perfectly by Eriksen and Kane today, we were lucky they didn't make anything of it IMO.

Cahill had a good match but Cesar was absolutely vital in the early stages of the match when spurs bombed down our right side. He cut out so many 1on 1s and intercepted so many passes when we really were not playing well. He performs when others don't which is a very important characteristic IMO.

His size IS a problem for a back three sometimes. Esp since despite being lightning quick he does not really have any kind of leap. But he would be wasted as wingback because he does not really have the attacking nous to make an impact. So I guess CB is ok for now. Pep usually also has a technically astute fullback in a 3man defense to open up the play so it is not an uncommon move tactically.

I think he's becoming more and more composed in possession now too with us playing out with this 3 man defence, which along with his defensive skills is very good for us although I think he struggled with Kane a lot first half.

Ps. He has to be considered as the new captain/vice captain of Chelsea when Terry and Ivanovic go in the summer because he has also developed in to a real leader too as well as an excellent defender here.

Azpi is a freak. This City game wasn't so much about his display but speaking generally, I think he's the best pure defender I've ever seen in my 20 years watching Chelsea.
