Mendy will be ours that’s for sure now. It’s a bit like Havertz transfer saga, just the matter of time not if.

Move on to the next and most likely the last one, Declan Rice, is he really worth the big chunk of money? Personally I’m torn, great addition to the squad no doubt due to his versatility but for over 50m? I don’t know. Can anyone who’s watched him regularly shade some lights?

He's the real deal.

Very strong, aggressive defensively (attacks the ball carrier) and great at tackling with both feet (prefers standing tackles). Not an amazing passer aka Fabregas, but more than decent and can certainly pick a pass. Also has great positional awareness from what i've seen.

The fact that he's a natural leader and a Chelsea fan is also a huge bonus

If only he was 50m, might be more expensive than that, which is my biggest worry.

This is also my biggest issue with Declan Rice. 50 million Euros, I would be fine with because Zakaria, who in my opinion is better than Rice, costs exactly 50 million Euros and will be available next season.
Technically way superior than Rice.

Yep, seems like the better idea to wait if Rice isn't available yet.

But I don't think the position is in desperate need of a player there currently. We'll wait for Rice until next year if need be rather than signing someone just to sign them.

Rice has 4+1 years left on contract. So basically till 2025.

Nothing is going to be different next summer.

We have FFP relaxation this season so it does not matter if we sign him now or next summer. This is why I think we will go all in for him very soon...

I cannot say who is better as I have not seen Zakaria. I will take your word he is better.

However, the problem in this situation is the 'romance' of signing Rice.

Chelsea youth product who is a true fan gets cast aside by the club at 14 which breaks his heart. He goes away and becomes a top player for a close rival by the age of 19. Club of his dreams admit there mistake and 'bring him home' at 21 to inherit the Chelsea leader status that has been vacant since Mr. Chelsea, John Terry, left.

The only problem is he is not a top player, actually not even close.

I don't mean wait until his price goes down, I'm saying we'll wait until we have money for the huge outlay that will be required. WH will likely demand £65-80m for him which there's no chance of us paying this summer.

This time next season we'll have PL and CL money to work with and will probably only need one or two players after what we've done this summer.

Yup pretty much this. She gets the praise when good players come...when its the bad ones its ohh but she is only a negotiatiator, a financial expert.

But Marina isnt the problem per se. The problem is that she is second in command, and as such responsible for not just financials, but scouting, planning etc. And she is only expert in financials. Obviously she doesnt do scouting herself, but she is in charge of high level decisions along with Roman. If Cech has a suggestion in scouting, its definately not his call, but needs approval by a higher member; Marina or Roman (given Roman trusts Marina, its likely her decision).

Her negotiation skills are great. As is her financial knowledge. But she is second in command and has much much greater responsibility and power. And she doesnt have football knowledge like many second in command members at other clubs have. And thats the whole point.

You cant have someone with such limited expertise in charge of scouting decisions or team building. Or, if you have, then its her damn responsibility ffs.

Lastly, everyone is creaming over this window when season didnt even start. Lets wait how these new players settle in, then we talk about how smart our summer was. Usualy its never good to change half of starting 11, but maybe Lamps does wonders.

Why do you say marina is second the second most powerful executive at Chelsea. How do you know this?

A year less on the contract could mean a lower fee and the way transfers work mean that any fees are spread over the contract length so its more money pushed into later seasons which is ideal. So the year could make some difference.

We need some more confirmed outgoings I think before we start to pursue others, but I think we will get them soon ish.

Personally I think rice will be way too high of an asking price and I don't rate him anywhere near what most people do but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
