It sets a dangerous precedent.

What's the point of offering 30+ years old players only one-year contracts and offer a 29 years old a 4-year contract?

A 2-year deal would have been more coherent with the way of the club in my opinion.

Great news, he´s been a massive servant to this club since his signing for 7 million pounds, one of the heroes of 2012, he´s won it all already with us, a real bargain compared to what Everton are asking for Stones, really deserved for Cahill, i wish him all the best and goodluck in the future here at Chelsea, may he have more success with us and becomes a legend too. Cheers

Defenders typically have long shelf lives. Think about it like this: in two years, his contract would have run out, so either the club can renew his contract on probably higher wages or let him go for free. This gives the club a little wiggle room; especially if they ever want to sell him.

Besides, he signed a 2 year deal anyway. He had two years left + two added.
