Great news, he´s been a massive servant to this club since his signing for 7 million pounds, one of the heroes of 2012, he´s won it all already with us, a real bargain compared to what Everton are asking for Stones, really deserved for Cahill, i wish him all the best and goodluck in the future here at Chelsea, may he have more success with us and becomes a legend too. Technically, he signed a 2-year contract extension since the previous one was due to expire in 2017. It is a decent decision to keep him - he can be a useful squad player (we can't fill the whole squad with world class players, can we?), is English (fills the HG quota as well) and if we decide to sell him at any time within the next 4 years, we can probably get a decent fee for him.

He's a good player that can contribute to the squad game at the least so it's alright. As Jason also said, it's basically a 2 year extension which I'm fine with.

Defenders typically have long shelf lives. Think about it like this: in two years, his contract would have run out, so either the club can renew his contract on probably higher wages or let him go for free. This gives the club a little wiggle room; especially if they ever want to sell him.

Besides, he signed a 2 year deal anyway. He had two years left + two added.
