In focus: Pedri

Spain's boy wonder: The 18-year-old Barcelona midfielder - who somehow looks even younger - has been key to his nation reaching the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

Team-mate Alvaro Morata hasn't been shy in praising the starlet, saying if Pedri stays injury-free "he will undoubtedly be one of the best players in the history of Spain". No pressure then.

Sam Dean takes a look at what makes Pedri so special and how he made his mark at this tournament.

Pre-season week, Hudson-Odoi stays, Two GKs looked at, Midfielder updates, Truth on Haaland

All feature in our latest Chelsea FC Newsletter

The smile on his face says it all, but Callum Hudson-Odoi looks almost certain to be staying at Chelsea for another season at the very least, and as you know that also makes me very happy.

I have a strong belief that there is a real player in there, and it sounds like Thomas Tuchel is determined to get that out of him. Read all about that here.

Hudson-Odoi will be one of the players joining Tuchel and his coaching team back at Cobham this week, with some of them already filtering in to do Covid-19 tests etc.

Now admittedly, I assumed training would begin right away on the Monday, but that wasn’t the case and we could have to wait a few days for that - find out more and what the plans are here.

Onto some transfer news, but once again nothing majorly significant. I’ll maintain as I always do, this doesn’t mean that nothing is happening, still plenty of time left.

But Chelsea are looking at the goalkeeper situation, that I do know. With Willy Caballero gone, and Kepa Arrizabalaga potentially going as well, Chelsea are eyeing a couple of free agents, you can check in on that situation here.

The midfield situation also looks to be heating up a little, and we have all read the stories of Declan Rice rejecting two West Ham contracts over the last few days.

So get the latest on our midfield targets and what is happening with that, here.

Finally, our man Dan McCarthy jotted down his thoughts, knowledge, and information on the truth about Erling Haaland to Chelsea, you can read that here.

Anyways, I’m getting ready to have Gareth Southgate make me eat my own words this week by getting us to the finals of the Euros. I’m buzzing for it, and I’m actually finally starting to feel confident!

It’s coming home… !

SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP

WHAT IS THE LATEST NEWS WITH TREVOH CHALOBAH AND WEST BROMWICH ALBION?

https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/what-is-the-latest-news-with-trevoh-chalobah-and-west-bromwich-albion/

2018-12-29T152139Z_420689728_RC18D817B020_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-MID-IPS.jpg

Valerien Ismael has already made his first signing as manager of West Bromwich Albion with the acquisition of Alex Mowatt from Barnsley to bolster an area of the field that needs work doing.

The Frenchman returned to a player he knows well from his eight months managing the Tykes, with Mowatt scoring eight times and captained a side that ended the season in the Championship’s top six.

Mowatt may not be the only midfield signing that the Baggies make though as they have been linked with Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah this week.

Football Insider reported that the 22-year-old is a target for the Midlands club on a permanent basis having spent the last three seasons out on loan from Stamford Bridge.

Two of those were in the Football League with Ipswich and Huddersfield, but Chalobah moved to French side Lorient last season and played 29 times in Ligue 1 – France’s top flight.

And the latest news is on his next movements are that West Brom’s interest in him is genuine, as per Express & Star reporter Joseph Masi.

According to Masi, Chelsea have made Chalobah available for transfer so a deal is there to be done for the versatile defensive player.

Despite playing as a holding midfielder in both of his loan spells in England, Chalobah spent more time at centre-back for Lorient, and with Ismael favouring a three at the back formation, Chalobah could be potentially arriving as part of a trio.

If the Baggies really are keen on bringing Chalobah into the fold then a deal could be potentially done by the end of the week – and it may need to be wrapped up by then to fend off any other clubs who may want to enter the race for the youngster.

I don’t know what’s more surprising, that we haven’t done a thing in the market yet or that Man City haven’t. I expected their owners to be uber pissed off at losing to us in the final and going on a mega spending spree early in the summer.

Guess they’re waiting for Kane? But with Levy in the equation surely they can’t bank all their hopes on that deal happening.

TBF, they did win the league and a domestic cup last season and they still have a strong squad. Don't think they are in a desperate need to buy players, even though they might want to buy Kane etc.

As Vesper mentioned earlier, Griezmann is on some insane wage. And he really loves living in Spain.

Complete no-go there. If Barca are desperate for cash we should make an offer for De Jong. He could become world class under a top coach like TT.

To be honest if La Liga stand firm on Barcelona, I just cannot see how they get their wage bill down from this position.

We may be able to loan Aguero off them next season if they're not allowed to register him.

Who else from Barcelona is on your shopping list? 😆

Starting negotiations and announcing a deal during a summer international tournament are two different things though.

Another thing to consider is that whether the club want to blow our entire transfer budget on one player (especially when you count the agent fees, wages on top of the transfer fee) OR use the money to improve other areas in the squad this summer. We still keep seeing stories about us being linked with other players and I can't see us buying those players if we get Haaland or can't see us buying Haaland if we get those players.

No offence to those players but all but two of them were irrelevant to the first team squad. So, I highly doubt their exits make any difference at all. And loaning Gilmour out might mean we'll buy a midfielder this summer.

Who is to say that we're not negotiating? Negotiates can be kept pretty discreet and we're probably the most discreet top club.

No, they probably don't, but the fact of the matter is we have something like 70 players so the cull has to start somewhere and normally the easiest ones to be rid of are the first to go. As for the culling, the real issue is more wages than fees, so it is kind of a case of every little helps.

Is this a known fact or what? Maybe my memory has failed me but I don't recall it being mentioned much in past years compared to now, almost as if people are trying to convince themselves something is really happening when it could be like 50-50. Last summer for instance, our pursuit of Havertz and Chilwell was public knowledge and everyone knew negotiations were taking place.

Even if we somehow managed to not leak anything out to the media, I would be surprised if the media covering the opposing club didn't get any inkling something is happening. Some may point to the Werner transfer as something that happened out of the blue but he had a release clause and there was no need for long negotiations with Leipzig.

Fair point but think we'll only start to feel its impact once we start to ditch the bigger deadwoods.
