I thought he tried his best for the majority but the way the game panned out it wasn't suited to him at all. So open in the middle in contrast to the away league win, and Mikel isn't the type of player that can react quickly and get around to close spaces. Once City got their rhythm going and were passing quickly in tight spaces it was always going to be a struggle for him especially.

Exactly this. I rate Mikel better than most do, but even though Matic had a poor game, he was still better than Mikel and still did a better job of shielding the back four than Mikel does when he's in top form. I've never seen a defensive midfielder playing for a top club who is so slow at reacting than Mikel. His mind works way too slowly and he's just not sharp enough.

What does he do? attacking wise he offers next to nothing, defensively he's lazy, hardly ever tracks his man, rarely wins back the ball... when he does it takes him 30 seconds to actually release the fucking thing.

In the last 20 minutes he did try, he passed the ball forward more times than in his whole Chelsea career, but it wasn't enough. As poor as Matic was today he was still better than Mikel in almost all aspects.

8 years of mediocrity, hopefully he'll be on his way out in the summer.
