Damn that was painful. Every attack he got involved in died the moment he got the ball. Expect him to bounce back but it is clear why we pursue hakimi. RJ is too conservative and slow to make a decision at times, especially vs low blocks that dont allow him to cross or run in behind.

It is why I have always felt he would end up as a DM/RCB. Not quick or tricky enough to play WB. Maybe if we switch back to a 4 he can play RB but his attacking game is too limited outside of his crossing.

I don’t think his pace is an issue at all. He looks slow bc he seldom attempts those sprints but when he wants to he is rapid. Remember city away? Benjamin Mendy is not a slow player but RJ completely blew him out of the water 3 times. I think it comes more down to attitude

Mendy is shot after his injuries, so not sure that is a good example. Problem with James is that I don't think he is that quick (he isn't slow, but he isn't quick) whilst I also question his stamina. I am not sure he doesn't do the running because he isn't bothered, rather he hasn't enough in the tank to do it enough.

Furthermore, I think he is better for the centre because he is actually pretty strong, even if he isn't the tallest. Tbh, I think TT moving him about and our apprant hard push for Hakimi shows he thinks similar.

Yeah RCB was always his calling.

People criticising his passes that led to goals when in reality only the first (Tielemans goal) was his fault. But even then, it was a handball. 2nd was Kovacic not being aware and getting caught on it too long. These errors are something that can be improved relatively easy (more assertion in forward passing)

For sure, also what is being forgotten is he is barely 21. So, he has plenty of time to iron that sort of stuff out, especially as the cup final was virtually his first time playing that role in men's football.

For me, James as a big future with us, but it will be in a more central position than in a wide position.

Even at right back he was often drifting into the half space (where Azpi got all his assists to Morata).

That switch to RCB everyone was talking about is not happening... Azpi, Kounde, Chris. 3 better options.

For RWB he is also problematic. We wanted Hakimi, may still get someone by reports TT wants a player for right side. CHO offers more in attack.

And even in some games by end of the season TT went with Rudi-Silva-Chris back 3 and Azpi RWB.

His best shot is we go back to 4atb, he would start as RB.

James became the second Chelsea player to score and assist in the same Premier League away game at Arsenal, after Juan Mata in September 2012, and his five touches in the opposition box in the first half alone was the most he had recorded in an entire Premier League fixture.
