How would that work with Lampard, who said it himself he's not here to be on the bench "not doing much", if we had a player who, unlike Frank, fit the position like a Mangala, Pogba, Witsel, etc?

The pivot is a terrible term and an average tactic. The 4-3-3 with a disciplined holding midfielder would be better for everyone. It would accomodate Lampard's strenghts, Ramires' and even Oscar could play there. The only player heavily marginalised by the 4-3-3 is Juan Mata who loses his favoured position behind the striker.

If we're somehow still this margin or closer away from the title in January, then it would be criminal not to sign a midfielder + a striker.

Getting a striker is not going to be easy though, and will probably cost us the title. But we should sign a midfielder, since Essien doesn't have much to contribute.

Both England and Chelsea to need to get rid of F. Lampard as a starter... yesterday. well overdue.

Lampard has been a poacher from midfield and excellent for PKs. BUT, in terms of moving the ball around the pitch quickly and driving past defenders, it's either been non-existent or been a long time since Frank has consistently done either.

If you don't create space and pull defenders out of position with movement and passing, --and-- you no longer have the beast called 'Drogba,' how do you create any quality chances?

On England, I would take Gerrard to Brazil but if Lampard goes, he's sitting on the bench. Gerrard keeps the ball moving quick, on the floor and is better all-around from deep positions. He's also better with FKs and almost as good on PKs. But, this is what any biased Chelsa fan would never admit: Gerrard is a complete midfielder whereas Lampard has rarely or never really shown himself to be an all-around CM. That's why Gerrard gets the nod in Brazil easily and can remain a top player at Liverpool. Chelsea need a couple of all-around center midfielders and BTW THEY NEED NOT BE ON THE LEVEL OF A. VIDAL!! although that would be nice, right?

Chelsea need two solid CMs very soon; not just one. Mikel is just not good enough and Frank should be OTW out while being used mostly as a sub. Or, just kiss the top four finish goodbye in 2014. Hopefully the future is bright and BLUE for young players like Loftus-Cheek and Jeremie Boga, but Chelsea need players now to drive the team foward, keep the ball moving quick and aid the defenders.

mvg is gone for sure till the end of the season. essien is finished and should not even be considered for cup ties as they are better used in ake/chalobah's development.

that leaves us with only 3 options and if we buy a DM,lets say we buy sven bender, this has to be a straight forward and clear as a crystal indication to mikel that his chelsea career is over. which means, he will leave. that effectively leaves us with just rambo-lamps pivot to be played in the CL no matter what. not a situation we would want ourselves to be in.

Yeah but it's better to get the CM in then risk losing out of them full stop just because we were a bit jittery on the cup tied thing. If it ultimately came down to an emergency in the CL for this season Luiz can play there (and that is ultimate emergency) and MVG should be back by then.

To be completely honest, personally, I'm not really that concerned about the Champions League this season. I'd much rather us get the top class DM and laser focus on the Prem. I think there are several teams in the CL that look a complete class above us and that we won't beat. The Premier League is there for the taking if we just improve in one or two areas.
