Gvardiol actually looks a helluva centre back and given his age, he has the potential to be a huge signing.

Leipzig however are a great example of what we need to be looking at in the future. I know they have at times benefitted from their links with Salzburg, but they've also made a lot of shrewd young signings in recent years and made a lot of money selling some of these players on. They've lost Upamecano and Konate and managed to replace them with a talent like Gvardiol, their scouting and recruitment has been admirable.

Rudiger, Kai and Kova below Mount lol

Yes, Mount will possibly end up with 30+ total goals produced (he has 27, 12 goals, 15 assists, in only 3300 minutes) at the age of 22/23, and has been a monster in our press.

He is one of the most valuable MF'ers on the planet. Do not care what the haters say.

Kovacic has missed far too many games (he only has 2600 minutes played)

Rudiger was a close call, but not going to put both CB's above Mount

Kai has less production than Mount, he has 13 goals, 5 assists, with only 7 league goals

Lamptey has had some injury issues since leaving also. I do not think his height effects his one on one defending, but it does hurt us on set pieces.

His incredible lack of height most definitely hurts on defending, and not just on set pieces.

Fofana just renewed for 5 years (until mid 2027), he is going nowhere.

He still is not 100% recovered from his horrid fibula fracture either (although I fully expect he will be by autumn).

I do not want Kounde at all, especially if he costs damn near £70m.

In a hypothetical. I take Fofana over Kounde, if Fofana was 100% fit, actually available, and £20m or less in cost (lower salary I am sure as well)

Other, better options out there to both.

Kind of ironic that the most natural Rudiger replacement, in terms of his main attributes (speed and aggression), is someone we sold for peanuts to Milan with no sort of buyback clause and probably no hope of getting back. Unless we reincarnate R.Madrid Pepe with added pace or somehow manage to bring back Tomori, anyone we get won't be anywhere near as good as Rudiger.

Which leads me to think we simply can't make the same mistake with Colwill if he's as good as everyone is saying. Might not be experienced enough or good enough yet but I'd hate to see history continue to repeat itself by signing another expensive defender who might (in his head) block his path and make him consider his options.

I've seen Bremer on a couple occasions and he looks a class player allbeit a little lacking in terms of acceleration off the mark. I can't see him playing as an outer CB in a 3 but as direct competition with Silva who we all know can't play every game at his age. I'd bring him in and take the risk on Colwill in a prominent role, and pray.

CB is probably the one position on the pitch where you don’t need to spend a bomb to get someone you can quickly mould into a top player. Especially someone like Tuchel and especially in a 3 CB system. He has made Rüdiger look incredible, 37 year old Silva look like he’s 27 etc.

You don’t need to spend VVD/Maguire/Dias sort of money to get a CB. If the club is smart we could buy 1 decently priced CB and then pick up a free agent like Ginter. Maybe someone with 1 year left on a cut priced deal.

I’ve really cooled on the idea of Koundé. Really wanted him and still would as an AC replacement if Rüdiger was staying. But I don’t think he’s worth the gamble now.

The priority for this summer should be 2 CBs, backup RB and LB, DM, and 2 wingers.

LB: Sosa or Raum

RB: Cash or Spence

CB: Gvardiol, Kounde or Timber

DM: Kamara (free)

RW/LW: Dembele (free), Raphinha or Gnabry

David Raum is interesting, I can see that for LB backup, good size (1.80m), speed, passing (11 assists in only 2400 minutes in the league)

IF we fail on Tchouameni and Rice, Kamara might work, certainly is the right price (free, lol)

If (very likely) Reece stays this coming season, then yes, Spence, as I doubt the board drops big bucks on Cash

as for CB's

IF we bought both Kounde and Timber (both are only 1.79m) we will get raped in the air in the EPL when both play, especially if we (as so many here seem to want) buy back Lamptey (1.63m) for backup RB (or ,dog forbid, IF Real buy Reece in 2023), and then use Maatsen (1.67m) at LB (if we buy no LB and Chilwell cannot go that game)

midget back 4! and we have/has other short options possibilities

Sarr (blech, and sub 6 foot for a CB at 1.82m)

Guehi was listed at 1.82m when he was sold (now listed at 1.83m)

Azpi, if he stays is only 1.78m and has been burnt so many times in the air

Henry Lawrence (RB) is only 1.71m

Juan Castillo 1.75m

Ethan Ampadu (as a CB) 1.83m

None of those 10 listed are over 6 feet, and multiple ones are dwarfs, whether for position (CB) or overall, regardless of where they play

I mean only one of them and not both. Ideally i want Gvardiol and one of Kounde or Timber. Inevitable we will need a 2 new CBs given both Christensen and Rudiger are gone and Azpilicueta could follow too.

what is this attraction to Kounde that so many have?

I wonder if most have watched him a lot like I have.

He is a flawed CB

short (nothing can be down about that)

very rash, a hot head who does stupid things when he gets argy bargy, and NOT in a Rudiger semi smart way

he is poor positionally

his passing is overrated

I think dropping 65 or 70m quid for him is madness

and my track record of calling out shit buys in advance is pretty damn good

Even if Timber grew a bit (not impossible) and topped out at 1.83m or so (I could live with that) he will VERY likely go to Manure (Ten Hag)

I am 100% sticking with my 5 finalists

Milan Skriniar  (his contract expires in 2023, and Inter are telling him £160-165K PW (5m euro per year, NET is how they listed it), take it our leave it)

Pau Torres (he has finally won me over, very near to, if not now, WC, would much rather take him than Kounde) big problem, Pep wants him BAD which MAY mean they sell one of Laporte, Stones, or Ake) this is a hard deal due to Pep

Josko Gvardiol

Bremer

Merih Demiral

IF we could grab Kalidou Koulibaly (turns 31yo on June 20 AND his contract also expires in 2023) for a low price, I think he still has 3 top season left, 2 for sure, and maybe even 4, he rebounded massively this season)

I am still fuming over Nico Schlotterbeck going to Dortmund

Not convinced with Bremer and Torres. Bremer untested with the back four, while Torres physically weak and slow. Skriniar tick almost all the box but slow just like Torres. Our new CBs should have decent pace, very good with the ball, good defending, and comfortable with either back three or back four.

Between Koundé and Gvardiol we’re really targeting a very particular sort of CB for that Rüdiger spot. Only around 6 feet tall, very quick, very good on the ball. Makes sense.

But if we buy more than one CB this summer I hope we also get a beast of a player who is commanding, intimidating, and a big threat at corners and set pieces. It’s something we’ve always had at Chelsea. Having all 3 of our CB’s being tiny isn’t a good idea.
