When it comes to Chelsea signing relatively low profile defenders for low fees I’m going to be optimistic. Those have often turned out to be our best signings. Azpi, Cahill, Malo Gusto, etc

Renato's father Nelson Veiga [a few weeks ago]:

🗣️ "Renato is very ambitious. The idea has always been to join Basel, have a good season and help the club achieve its goals.

At the end of the season he wants to take the next step, if the conditions suit him and Basel. He is now capable of playing at a higher level."

Arsenal are getting a serious upgrade. We are experimenting with another 20 year old.

Missing an opportunity to put together a strong XI

It's really crazy times when people who simply ask for a couple of good players in the 25yo range are called "spoilt brats" or impatient.
It's as if signing young talent made signing established players an impossible task for some strange reason.

I'm convinced this is all a blind implementation of a system that did work in other circumstances, other sport, which completely disregards the peculiarities of the contact sport football is. Even American Football, which is evidently also a contact sport, isn't really that similar to football.

At the same time people also call and rightly so to drop/sell every experienced player we have. Now Sterling and Chilwell being last ones. It was the same with Silva last season and Azpi, Jorginho and others before... Last couple of days I watched games where most experienced players are biggest problem. Valencia, Messi, Ronaldo, Pepe...

Except that the youngest player you listed above is 34yo (Valencia). The others are closer to 40 than 30; Pepe is 41.

I think Chilwell is a good player, but his constant injuries turned him into a lesser player IMO.
Sterling seems like a similar case, but perhaps for different reasons: burnout maybe?

Afaik the main reason to sell the players was to lower the wage bill -- not really about quality. Except Andreas, which is the one sale I don't understand at all.

Maresca will assess Veiga in pre-season and judge whether he is first-team ready or requires a loan spell to aid his development.

Why buy him when there's already Lesley, Santos, Casadei who are DMs waiting to be assessed?

The transfer came out of nowhere according to Basler fans Veiga stagnated this season!!!

I'm all for adding a few players in their prime to round out the squad we have. Can't afford another season where we stagnate, are inconsistent because we are playing young players all over the pitch.

That’s also what I heard. He was pretty meh all season which is weird cos we tend to buy these youngsters on form usually. Real head scratcher this one. But I doubt he was bought as midfielder, rather as CB/LB cover
