Mata had a lot of sub-par performances in 4-3-3 under AVB. Being better than Malouda and Kalou at that time is not really saying much. And for all his offensive brilliance, Mata was one of the reasons AVB's pressing tactics did not work out.

It's an interesting thing because one of the reasons I thought Mourinho wouldn't come back here is having a team built around Mata. Everything that Mourinho generally loves, counter-attacking, defensive solidity, quick movement, Mata is not. What Mata has is incredible vision, an excellent touch, and is a good finisher. Whereas Ramires strikes me as a perfect Mourinho sort of player, Mata doesn't seem to fit. Of course, Mourinho could always adapt his style to fit Mata better because he is our best player. It will be very interesting to see.

I think there will be plenty of bumps in the road for Jose in terms of team selection next season. There will be times where he will bench Mata or Hazard. As much as Jose's return felt like a fairy tale for Chelsea fans, we should keep in mind that there is no such thing as "and they lived happily ever after" in football.

I don't think its exactly a case of having a "Mourinho-type" of player. I think he would definitely like his squad to have good options and someone who has incredible vision, an excellent touch and a good finish would definitely figure into his plans in some form. From what he has said in the press, he'll be creating a new identity for his Chelsea team and I wouldn't be surprised if Mata became an integral part of it.

It may not fit Mata, but it does fit Ramires, Lamps, KDB, MvG, Mikel better, which in the end is more important. Our best player is not Mata, it is Hazard. Technically he is just as good as Mata but much faster and younger. His as well as Oscar's ceiling is much higher than Mata's. Even though Juan Mata is a brilliant little player, we can and should do better in terms of star man. Mata is a worldclass player, but he won't get any better, Hazard is the future. Hazard has ability to impose himself on any opposition with his speed, Mata will always go missing against strong defenses like Bayern, City, Real, juve.

It's possible for sure, maybe even likely but I can also envision a side where Mata is not as important. To be fair, he's shouldered too much of the load anyway and a more balanced attack (especially more width and better production from strikers) would be most welcome.

No. We did not sign those players only to play in 4-2-3-1 but to be able to play various formations as Mourinho has indicated that with the signing of Schurrle. What we've basically got now is a squad that is versatile and adaptable to play in more than 1 formation and right now, we can't tell what is Jose preferred formation but we will certainly switch between a few throughout the season. Seems rather silly to say we will be returning to 4-3-3 at some point because it fits Ramires, Lampard, KDB, MvG, Mikel etc. Can agree with the former two but KDB, MvG and Mikel?! We don't even know how KDB and MvG have fitted in yet and you just jumped the gun saying they work best in 4-3-3. Similar case for Mikel. He might not have had the best time playing in a 4-2-3-1 so far but it might help him if he were to actually play beside a reliable and solid midfielder in the pivot.

Not denying that Mata has his weaknesses defensively and off the ball (which he can definitely work on) but there is so much more to the issue of him going missing against Bayern, City, Juventus etc...

the reason ppl don't want him playing in a 433 is due to his defensive weaknesses. Mou. will use Oscar like he used Modric, and he'll use Mata like he used Ozil.
