While that's probably true, why should it matter? If he still had a long term contract, the wage issue would be a bigger obstacle but nearing the end of his deal it gets less and less important.

Bakayoko's deal is up next year and by now he should know he's not getting anywhere near his current wages (£110K/wk) for his next contract anyway. If he lowers his demands even a little bit (for example to somewhere around £60-80K range) his new salary should fit nicely with Lyon's other players wages. The difference in salary for the 2021/22 season could either be subsidized by Chelsea or covered by Lyon with a one-off signing on fee for the player.

That's assuming Bakayoko knows his level and accepts the reality. If he has his head in the clouds and imagines he's getting the same wage or more at his next club, there could be problems. He already hit the lottery once by getting a contract too big for his skill level, he's not going to get it again.

Pretty sure Bakayoko realises he won't ever earn anywhere near £110K/wk again, so he will undoubtebly ride out this last year. Much like Drinkwater.

I wouldn't compare Bakayoko and Drinkwater together at all.

The former is obviously still trying his best to make a good career for himself and has played the last three seasons at very decent clubs (Milan, Monaco, Napoli). He's obviously not a top player but at the very least he's proved himself to be competent at clubs aiming for UCL spots in Italy/France so wherever he ends up at he'll probably have a good 5-8 years ahead of him at that level.

Drinkwater on the other hand is a washed up alcoholic who's played less than 10 games of football in the last three years despite no major injuries, and has failed to make any sort of impact at any of his three loan clubs too (unless you count a training ground brawl with his team mate as having an impact). I wouldn't be surprised if he announced his retirement from football the day after his contract at Chelsea is over because he clearly doesn't have any ambition to play anymore.

With Drinkwater there's absolutely zero hope of him moving before his contract expires but I can't see Bakayoko staying in the U23s for a year just to collect his pay check so he should be doing whatever he can to make a permanent transfer happen. Or what do you think will happen if he rides out the last year and plays no football? He'll have wasted a prime year of his career for the sake of £1-2M difference in wages and he'd probably get even less for his next contract then.

I really don't see much of a difference in options B and C from either Bakayoko's or Chelsea's perspective. Either way Chelsea will have to cover for a portion of his wages for the coming season and in both cases he'll then go for a smaller pay packet at his next permanent club, whether the contract is signed this year or next year. In both scenarios Bakayoko still gets the same £5.3M for the coming season so riding out the contract would make very little difference for him, unless he thinks he's getting a significantly higher contract when signing as a free agent.

I could see a club potentially handing him out a slightly bigger contract as a free agent, but then again if he has a bad season he might get even less than he would this year. Or if he gets a bad injury during the season (while playing out on loan) he might get nothing. So there is definitely an incentive for him to find a club to sign his next long term contract ASAP.

I fully think the contract stuff will sort itself out but the only problem in my point of view is finding a club who are actually willing to pay any kind of transfer fee for him. Bakayoko's amortisation value for the coming season is £8M so the club should optimally be looking for at least that much, and there might not be any takers.

Chelsea FC ended up being priced out of a move to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano.

The south west London side were strongly linked with a move to sign Haaland from Dortmund earlier on in the summer window before Romelu Lukaku emerged as Chelsea FC’s main target up front in recent days.

Haaland, 21, is widely considered to be one of European football’s most promising young attacking talents but as things stand, it appears that he will be remaining at the German club beyond the summer.

According to Italian journalist Romano, Chelsea FC had a strong interest in Haaland this summer but they switched their attentions elsewhere after it became clear that they would not be able to meet Dortmund’s asking price.

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Romano said: “They [Chelsea FC] wanted Haaland as a priority. They’ve been inquiring but never made an official bid as Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea say. They knew making a bid for €110m-130m wasn’t smart because Borussia Dortmund were going to refuse this bid.

“They had in plan to try again and find a solution but Borussia Dortmund were always the same like Sancho last summer. They were asking €175m because they always wanted to keep the player.

“By the end of July, they had a feeling around Lukaku that there was a chance to sign him. Inter were saying it was impossible to sign Lukaku and they always said he was untouchable. He was acting like the king of Milan: ‘I love the city, I want to stay here’. It was the position of everyone involved in the situation.

“By the end of July, Chelsea felt something was going to change because of Inter’s financial situation. They felt Inter were open to selling Lukaku.

“They said, ‘let’s go on Lukaku’ because they can’t sign Haaland now and [they] can sign Lukaku with an interesting bid.”

Chelsea FC, who finished fourth and won the Champions League last season, will kick off their new Premier League campaign with a home clash against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Hot Days of Jules Koundé have become more like lukewarm days, at best. Chelsea’s supposed “acceleration” never quite arrived last week, and the situation appears to be pretty much the same as at the start: we’re interested in the 22-year-old center back, who’s probably interested in us as well, but Sevilla aren’t interested in anything less than their €70-80m asking price (without any makeweight).

Sevilla director of football Monchi confirmed as much in an interview with Diario de Sevilla, adding that everyone on their side is cool and calm, and willing to maintain the status quo if Chelsea’s offer never even arrives (let alone the two teams finding an agreement).

“Koundé is fine, he is calm, he arrived later for the European Championship, but he is already 100% involved with the team. If we had played in Birmingham he would have played. [His] physical condition is very good from what we saw last Sunday.”

Koundé has yet to play a single minute of preseason football, though he was due to play against Aston Villa before Sevilla pulled out of that friendly last week due to “reasons related to COVID-19”. Sevilla’s season starts this weekend and presumably Koundé will be taking full part.

“There is no specific offer for him, because there has not been one. A lot noise, but no real offer today. I don’t know what will happen.

“I do say that [Sevilla have] a business model that will not change. That is what has made lifting ten titles and playing twenty finals possible. When there is an important offer you have to accept it, because that will allow us to improve the team [but] if there is no such offer, he knows that he will continue to be a Sevilla player and he knows it.”

Tuchel’s supposedly pushing for this signing, but we have less than three weeks to do so if we are to get it done at reasonable financial terms (i.e. not panicking into exercising yet another €80m buyout clause). Time to move!

Not sure if we are linked but talk Bayern want €10m to sell Tolisso to go for Sabitzer. Be an interesting move for €10m.

Linkee with Spurs, Juventus, West Ham, Arsenal and United. Would think we would be aware of him and potentially a good deal at that price, no? He is a combative box to box player.

I saw that too reported by Bild. Not too sure about his ability but he was a rotation option during Euros. I'm guessing we are in the market for a more defensive CM to cover for Kante. I don't see how they don't expect shambles if they expect RLC to play that role.
