The Hot Days of Jules Koundé have become more like lukewarm days, at best. Chelsea’s supposed “acceleration” never quite arrived last week, and the situation appears to be pretty much the same as at the start: we’re interested in the 22-year-old center back, who’s probably interested in us as well, but Sevilla aren’t interested in anything less than their €70-80m asking price (without any makeweight).

Sevilla director of football Monchi confirmed as much in an interview with Diario de Sevilla, adding that everyone on their side is cool and calm, and willing to maintain the status quo if Chelsea’s offer never even arrives (let alone the two teams finding an agreement).

“Koundé is fine, he is calm, he arrived later for the European Championship, but he is already 100% involved with the team. If we had played in Birmingham he would have played. [His] physical condition is very good from what we saw last Sunday.”

Koundé has yet to play a single minute of preseason football, though he was due to play against Aston Villa before Sevilla pulled out of that friendly last week due to “reasons related to COVID-19”. Sevilla’s season starts this weekend and presumably Koundé will be taking full part.

“There is no specific offer for him, because there has not been one. A lot noise, but no real offer today. I don’t know what will happen.

“I do say that [Sevilla have] a business model that will not change. That is what has made lifting ten titles and playing twenty finals possible. When there is an important offer you have to accept it, because that will allow us to improve the team [but] if there is no such offer, he knows that he will continue to be a Sevilla player and he knows it.”

Tuchel’s supposedly pushing for this signing, but we have less than three weeks to do so if we are to get it done at reasonable financial terms (i.e. not panicking into exercising yet another €80m buyout clause). Time to move!

Let's hope we tell Sevilla they can shove Kounde up theirs for 80m. Talking about overpaying. Take away the issues i have with is lack of height and physicality, he is not a ready made world class cb that would warrant such a price. He is a bit like a miniature david luiz, skillfull and flashy, funny hair but error prone.

Maybe the emergence of Trevoh Chalobah means we are not in the market for a CB anymore. Would welcome this turn.

Sevilla have reportedly asked for an additional £20m on top of Jules Kounde’s release clause if Chelsea are to pay his fee in stages.

This is according to 90min, who claim that the Blues have tried to find other avenues in order to sign Kounde.

Kurt Zouma was offered as part of a player plus cash swap. However, Sevilla wanted their defender’s £68.4m (Guardian) release clause paid off in full.

Chelsea were obviously reluctant to part with such a figure, so instead searched for different means of obtaining the Frenchman.

90min state that after the Zouma proposal fell short, the Stamford Bridge chain of command asked if they could reimburse Kounde’s release clause across a number of years.

Sevilla accepted this suggestion but apparently bumped up the overall price to £88m.

Understandably, the Blues refuted the idea of paying over the odds, even for a player of Kounde’s potential.

They are still working on ways to recruit the 22-year-old, whilst finalising the transfer of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.

Chalobah worth considering

Of course, Thomas Tuchel may have a few things to think about regarding Kounde’s potential arrival after last night’s Super Cup victory.

Trevoh Chalobah made his competitive Chelsea debut in the back three, played all 120 minutes and was arguably the Blues best performer.

“He never lost face and stayed calm and was physical enough to play 120 minutes,” said Tuchel on Chalobah after the match.

“It was quite impressive. He forced his way into our thinking.”

Of course, there is no guarantee that Chalobah will be part of the first-team squad this season.

Especially not if the Kounde deal does get over the line.

But it’s certainly given Tuchel some food for thought.

It was pretty much the same before he got substituted. Honestly the game changed once Ziyech got injured, he also dropped back to help in midfield. You always risk giving up something when you play with a midfield two.

Our guys are still not match fit, definitely not up to a 120 minutes match game.

 

Tchoumani looks like a nice player for the future, the Barca wonderkid is another one. If you are genuinely worried about the midfield Tchoumani is nowhere near good enough to improve our midfield. He would be a good depth and provide an emergency backup.

add him now and next summer go HARD for Nicolò Barella (as I say, the closest thing atm to Kante on the planet, a wrecking ball of relentless chaos)

Hopefully we secure Koundé and then that’ll be the end of our business. We’ll just have to pray for Kante’s health for the whole season.

He is a nice player, but I don’t think he is good enough to challenge Kante, Kocacic, and Jorginho for playing time. We need another midfielder, we need depth so Tchoumani would provide that.

Haven’t that Barca player Ilaix Moriba been linked to us, seen him being mentioned not sure the legitimacy of the sources though.

I would prefer another midfielder rather than Kounde. With Chalobah that is 6 CB at the club. Zouma is still here.

Kounde should be the club's next focus.

If we don't sign a midfielder, I can see Tuchel playing Mount in midfield, which of course will also help free up space in attack.

I think Mount in a MF two is a disaster waiting to happen though right now. The Fulham game for instance, he left Billy overrun most of the first half to go over to the sort of role he usually plays, linking up with Chilwell, playing in that sort of wide 10 role.

In a 3 man MF maybe but in a 2 he is not disciplined enough and it looks like we will play 343 still. 

Unless we sell Zouma or dare I say it Christensen (although hopefully he stays), we should prioritise MF first imo.

So, the question is is he likely to be a good prospect in the future? or is Kounde the best option?

I think we should still get Koundé and loan out Chalobah to Valencia or other good club. Zouma might leave being included in Koundé deal(or go elswhere) and we have Azpi and King Thiago who might not stay here for long years, especially Silva. So now Koundé is available it’d be right choice to buy him and it wouldn’t mean Trevoh is done here.

He was perfectly capable of working in a midfield two next to Makelele. But he only realized his full potential when released in a midfield 3. With the right partner, Mount can play in a midfield two even if it is not his best position, but neither is as one of the 2 behind the striker... His best performances have come when he dropped deep from there, making us effectively more of a 3-5-2. We usually play a little different when Mount plays as opposed to playing with wingers like Ziyech and Pulisic.

£88m is easily twice his value , especially when passing is his best asset. Chalobah over him every day at that price.

Agreed. With a little tweaking he can actually make the no 8 or the double pivot as his own with someone like Kante who can compliment him well. 

Mount is a versatile player in my opinion and so early in his career he has shown he can adapt and learn. He might not be a superstar in the making but he surely is the One to Have in your team.

I hope Tammy takes the Roma deal FFS- I can see Roma switching focus to another striker if he takes a long time to take a decision and I have zero confidence Arsenal will come up with the same money esp when they are haggling over deals for Aaron Ramsdale, Maddison etc too
