Here's a question, has there ever been a time where a club that won the league or CL, did nothing in the summer, and continued on to be just as or even more successful the following season?

We may aswell have signed no one in 2009 (Sturridge barely played and Zhirkov was useless) and we went from 3rd to 1st.

yup. liverpool 2 years ago. won the cl , made 0 signings, went on to win the league.

Fair enough. Albeit their front three did score 75 goals the season prior so the risk measurement is far and away different from ours.

And one of those reasons was because Rashford naturally grew from a 10-13 goal a season forward to a 20 plus goal a season forward.

They also added a goal scoring midfielder and a CF that helped too.

that does sound tautological.

Pretty much given up on the legaue. but i am fine if we collect the cups we have to win anyway and maybe add one of the domestic. ending the season with 2 or 3 small trophies would be fine. we need to maintaint our momentum and continue winning finals again. The squad is still young and will get better. It is not a huge number of signings we need. If  the baord feels we can't get the necessary quality i am fine with signing no one at all and wait tille the market is more accomodating. what is frustrating is that there were some quality moves possible and we were not involved.

The quality and the ceiling of this squad is tremendous though am also not contented with lack of 1 or 2 quality signings but would rather we sign quality than quantity...

But some of the comments are like today is 1st September. We will sign players! And we are only interested in top, expensive players.

EURO just happened.

Tuchel wanted to see some players in pre season before making decisions.

We need to sell players also.

Many reasons why nothing happened.

City, Liverpool, Bayern, Juventus, Inter also signed no one.

I am totally relaxed. Our transfers since sacking Conte have been great and Marina is perfect!

City also want only Kane and Grealish. Deals like that don't happen overnight.

Bbc sport reporting Utd signing Varane for 34m. That is a steal for a very good CB. I would say he is better than Zouma and they are valued the same.

Not really and it got worse when the Emmanuel guy left that was scouting for the loan army. She is good at squeezing the best deal possible but has little to no football knowledge. She has learnt from the flops, but still needs a director (Cech) to suggest targets and help evaluate their value and suitability for the club.

We did sign players that summer and if that didn't drill home the message that we shouldn't sign for the sake of signing then nothing will.

Thankfully we seemed to have learned/Tuchel is doing it differently to Conte.

I liked how we used to sign 2 or 3 youngsters for the loan army, knowing full well they had a slim chance of ever making it into the team. Was still nice finding out who they were and keeping up with them over loans.

Can't believe people on here are shitting themselves because United signed Varane🤣

Don’t think anyone’s worried about Varane on his own. People just wonder why United, who already finished above us somewhat comfortably, are plugging the few holes they had in their team whilst we haven’t yet. Is Varane as amazing as lots of people are hyping up? No. But he’s way better than Lindelof.

To be fair mate I'm better than Lindelof so ditch that comparison. As for Varane, I send anyone to go and watch him this season, especially the CL, he was a fucking cart horse and looked like he needed to untie the caravan he was carrying nine times out of ten.

Watch him in this league.....fucking spanner.

Yeah, lots of people on Twitter are acting as though Varane is VVD or prime John Terry which he isn’t close to.

Varane has been suspect for around 2 seasons now. I think he is a good player but he was way overhyped between 19-23 and has continued to dine out on that hype ever since.

That said, he is quite a bit better than Lindelof so Utd are improved with him.

This idea too that we're throwing Tuchel under a bus I find laughable.

All of the reports suggest Tuchel wanted the opportunity to run the rule over all the returning players before making decisions. A number of reports also suggest he's been impressed in particular with Sterling, RLC and Broja. It isn't unreasonable to suggest Tuchel has told the board only the absolute top targets or don't bother, he'll utilise the loan army to fill missing spots. Hopefully we can hit him one of his main targets but I don't see it creating an issue between him and board if we don't.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, the reports also directly quote Tuchel as saying that he absolutely sees the need of bringing in new signings.

I won't say that the club threw him under the bus just because they failed to pull off a tough signing like Haaland, but there will be scrutiny if we haven't looked at alternatives despite allowing Giroud and Gilmour to move on.

Sky Germany reporter Jesco von Eichmann explained how Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland’s reaction to Chelsea’s reported £150million bid for him.

At this point, it is safe to say that the 21-year-old is pretty aware of the rumours about his future and Chelsea’s interest, in particular.

Based on Eichmann’s claim, the striker even seems to be curious about what the media is saying about him

“I had a little chat with him today, actually,” Eichmann told Sky Sports (via Football Daily).

“He passed by and asked me, ‘Hey are there any news about me?’

“I said, ‘No, actually, no. Chelsea still at £150 [million].

“He was smiling and said, ‘No, I’m not [worth] that.’

“He’s very satisfied here at Dortmund, he loves to play for Borussia Dortmund and everything is fine to him.

“He doesn’t seem to want to leave, so I don’t think he will.”

Not sure if Jesco is reliable mouthpiece in Germany, but to me the biggest deterrent to this deal is Haaland's lack of significant interest to join Chelsea.

When Eden Hazard joined us in 2012, players like Drogba and Joe Cole were constantly in his ear convincing him that we were the right club for him. Does Haaland have any such connection? The only thing I've heard him say before is that he would have loved to play with Lampard. And now the latter is not even here.
