He worked as a no. 8 very well last season. 10 goals and 5 assists only come when you work in that position

I don't agree. You have to be able to see past the stats, or you end up buying players like Mateja Kezman.

Said it earlier, IF Willian extends his contract, I don't think we will sign Havertz.

Logical. Indeed we could justify believing that wanting to extend Willian is a sign that we either don't want, or don't believe we can get, Havertz. Unless Frank wants him to serve to same function in the group that Drogba did in 2014/15.

Clever signing for Dortmund. Not an exceptional player but someone who fits in with what Favre wants from his fullbacks and with the uncertainty around Hakimi, getting a replacement on a free is a shrewd move. Think he is still defensively suspect to a certain level and didn't think we would ever be interested in him at all. Or United tbf. Can see why Spurs would be after him as he isnt as bad as Aurier.

Apparently we wanted to buy Alaba as CB but failed to convince him to come to London. Shame would have been an awesome short-term signing and solved our CB and LB woes in one go.

David Alaba: the best centre-back in the Bundesliga?

https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/is-david-alaba-the-best-centre-back-in-germany-bayern-munich-austria-11365

It’s a transformation that's been five years in the making, but Pep Guardiola’s prediction that Bayern Munich all-rounder David Alaba can become one of the world’s best centre-backs may just have come to pass.

"He's an unbelievable talent," the current Manchester City boss said of Alaba midway through his three-season reign in charge of the record champions between 2013 and 2016. "He can play anywhere. He's quick, good in the build-up and always 100 per cent focused. Without doubt he can be one of the best centre-backs in the world. He's a huge gift for Bayern."

With enough layers to satisfy an army of six-year-olds in a game of pass the parcel, few players are as versatile, let alone as accomplished in such a range of positions, as Alaba. Joining Bayern at the age of 15 from Austria Vienna as a precocious midfielder, the Austrian handyman was reimagined as one of the world’s leading left-backs by Louis van Gaal in 2010, via a loan spell at Hoffenheim.

He moonlighted as a central midfielder, winger and left-sided centre-half under Guardiola; Carlo Ancelotti took a leaf out of Bayern’s Conversion A-Z by deploying the Austrian in a central defensive role; and it was out of necessity rather than design that Niko Kovac shifted his trusty left-back inside for the trip to Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 10 of the 2019/20 season. At the time, first-choice sentries Niklas Süle and Lucas Hernandez were both out with long-term injuries.

A 5-1 defeat, hastened by Jerome Boateng’s first-half sending off, spelled the end for Kovac - but not for Alaba the centre-back. Hansi Flick was rewarded for keeping faith with the Austrian as Bayern ran out commanding 4-0 winners over Dortmund on his debut as interim coach, restricting the Black-Yellows to a single shot on Manuel Neuer’s goal - an unheard of statistic for BVB in the modern era of data collection.

Alaba has been a staple at the heart of the Bayern defence ever since. Even with record signing Hernandez available again for the return trip to Dortmund on Matchday 28, Flick entrusted Alaba with the role of keeping Erling Haaland in check.

"I'm very happy because David's a player who leads the back four and always gives instructions to his colleagues," Flick said of his universalist talent. "He takes the initiative, takes charge. You can hear him talking to the players. As a coach, I want to see and hear my players do that - to coach their teammates. He’s just a very intelligent player, and his development as a centre-back has been phenomenal. He ticks all the boxes as a central defender."

Lucas Hernández would be his main competition (and ironically also a top 5 or so in the world LB as well, just like Alaba)

If Alaba is available you'd have to imagine Pep would be all over him. Their defense is as shambolic as ours is.

I don't think he is looking for a lcb though Laporte pretty much have that nailed down.

As lb maybe, not sure Mendy will return to Mendy that I watch in his debut. He was an absolute monster

yes, Shitty is my main fear IF we go hard for Alaba

Alaba as primarily a LCB means no need to go for Romagnoli

and in theory, we still could sign Chilwell (obviously at that point Havertz would not be possible as the absolute BEST case would be around £100-110m combined for Alaba and Ben and quite likely closer to £115m-120m)

Shitty defenders (other than Laporte and Walker and the misused, wrong leagued, stupid buy of Cancelo) really are shitty, lolol

and INSANELY expensive (£440m spent on the players listed, when GK'ers are added in, it is £492m in outlays, which is just madness, lolol) If you toss in the now gone Danilo, it is over half a billion quid, and of that £519m, £209m was just on fullbacks! All our fullbacks on the main books, either on loan or on the squad cost under £90m combined in transfer fee gross spends. Shitty has spent £122m more than us on fullbacks and are very unhappy. £122m would damn near buy Sancho, lolol. (which was their De Bruyne-style cock up, ironically)

chequebook Pep

CB John Stones   marginally shit
CB Nicolás Otamendi   dogshit
CB Eric García  meh so far
LB Benjamin Mendy    dogshit
Oleksandr Zinchenko    meh, but his wifey is hawwwwt as fuck, lololol
RB João Cancelo  strange buy, he is a great RB, but Pep doesnt like him apprently, and the EPL is too physical for him
CB/DMF Fernandinho    35yo, and is soon spent, he is not a valid CB, just look at last night, but has been a superb player, it was a great buy

Rodri is not a CB, despite having to play there due to so many injuries, but he is a magnificent DMF

out on loan

LB   Angeliño (at RB Leipzig until 30 June 2020) meh
CB  Tosin Adarabioyo (at Blackburn Rovers until 30 June 2020) meh
CB  Philippe Sandler (at Anderlecht until 30 June 2020) meh

RB Pedro Porro  (at Real Valladolid CF until 30 June 2020)

DMF Ante Palaversa  (at KV Oostende until 30 June 2020)  meh

Mendy was a Ligue 1 monster and an big boy league flop, just like multiple players off that 2016/17 Mbappe Monaco team

We got another donkey in Baka

Lemar has been beyond doghsit at Atleti

Sidibe has been meh

Mbappe , the cunt Fabinho, and Bernardo Silva were the only really great layers off there, plus João Moutinho is decent (Falcao is complicated and was injured and shit here and at Manure)

they did have some good youngsters out on loan in 2016/17, like Allan Saint-Maximin, and Abdou Diallo and Hélder Costa

I remember Mendy really impressing me when he first moved to City. His crossing and delivery into the box was wicked and his pace bombing down the flank was quite a sight. I guess his big injury really took a lot out of him?

But yeah, he seems kind of the opposite of a Pep player. Can see them moving on from him.

Pep has had nightmare with his defensive signings at City. How much has he spent on full backs and center backs? Only Laporte and arguably Walker have turned our to be decent. The rest have been awful for them.

Injury cost him, bu otherwise he was a monster. When he came Pep pretty much designed his left side for Mendy. For pep and team like city to pretty much do that you have to be damn good
