Just because Mikel cannot contribute offensively, does not mean he is a DM. He is equally inept at defensive part.

Its like starting with one fewer player when he plays. Opponents just let him do his thing as they know he cant hurt them. Only a blind man can still believe that he brings something to the table.

Jose must be blind then right?

Mikel is a strange one, he has put in fairly consistent performances over the last couple of seasons that seem warrant him being in a higher level team, but without ever doing anything spectacular in fact the only time you really notice him is when he makes a mistake, other than that i rarely even notice he's in the side, probably because he's not got much, if any, offensive threat.

He's a big powerful midfielder, great composure and technical ability when avoiding challenges or winning the ball back, but his tackle/interception stats have always been quite low, passing is usually 90%+ but that's because he tends to lay balls off left and right or pass backwards... SO MANY BACKWARD PASSES .. I don't think John is a bad player, but we've just gotten a huge upgrade in shape of Nemanja Matic

Personally, i hope Mikel moves on next seasons because i think he'd be a regular first team starter for say Galatasaray or Roma or someone like that and i'd wish him all the best, he might even get to play further forward like he does for Nigeria, unlikely though and for the rest of this season not a bad squad player to have

The thing with Mikel is that he doesn't give us enough in Midfield, all the big sides have DMs who offer something going forward, whether it's passing, the ability to beat players or a goal threat. Mikel offers none of that, he's a good defensive player, he offers stability, but watching Matic these past few games its crazy to think that Mikel lasted as long as he has.

No I don't believe that for a second myself, what other defensive midfielders offer is movement.

Mikel is slow and doesn't move enough which is his main deficiency - if you look at Lucas for example he also offers very little going forward but covers a lot more ground at high speed. In our system we need a more mobile player than Mikel in midfield - that's the reason Matic was signed and Luiz has been playing there on occasions.

Mikel would be a good defensive midfielder in a system that didn't rely on him to cover large spaces as it's required in our current system.

one thing i like about him is the way he holding the ball. and when he put a trick or two there like roulette or something else.

as for me, its ok if a DM dont cover big space on the field, but when opponent want to messing in his area, he have to pressing that hard. i dont see mikel do that. he just do jogging, and jogging like its a beautiful morning with no pressure at all
