I think his best position is DM overall. I have watched him play this season as a CB and he looks very good on the ball, but wins not many aerial duels, especially on set pieces.

I also believe that a midfield between Ampadu and Rice could work, because Ampadu is quite creative

I'm not convinced he'll be the answer at DM for a progressive based possession based side, whenever I saw him under Conte and Sarri he was much more convincing at CB, under the latter especially he looked all at sea playing that role with the on the ball demands.

What does he exactly lack for a DM role for a progressive based side? He is quite creative and should have gotten an assist yesterday, but the sheffield guy missed a, 1 vs 1 situation. He wins his tackles and aerial duels. His technique is quite impressive and he can move with the ball forward and dribble past players. I do not know what he lacks as a DM.
I have also seen him as a CB this season and his positioning is sometimes weird and he does not win that many aerial duels in the CB position as he should do as a CB,especially because of his bad positioning.

Played very well as a DM against liverpool, one of their better players on the day. I think SU have city next, hope he starts there aswell.
