Betrand needs more games to improve himself.

He did a decent job on the left IMO to block crosses and any other attack on our left flank. IMO he does what a defender ask from him.

the part lacking in his game is the attacking portion. that portion of the game seems underdeveloped probably because the fat waiter didn't give him any clear instructions. e.g bomb forward? drive into the box? or pump crosses into the box? or just to provide a option?

much of the time, betrand was left with the ball, not knowing what to do, or not knowing who will meet the end of his crosses. he scuffled a few good chance to cross, but that will ultimately improve with more games under his belt. much of his game was just to pass back to terry to pump a long ball forward

Which is fair enough. He's definitely good enough to be a squad player for us - Shaw and Bertrand in a couple of years after Ashley retires sounds good to me. What I don't like though is how people call him useless - he's not. I think defensively this year CFC have been poor - that's not due to our individual talent but more due to the fact that we have never had a consistent back four this season.

Bertrand has also only played a handful of games at full back this season - I feel most people are writing him off based on his performances out wide, which I think is unfair.

I just hope Van Aanholt gets to play a handful of games at LB like Bertrand...that'll help the coaching staff decide which player to keep in the long run.

PvA seems to be more explosive going forward, still learning the defensive side..(based on his games at Vitesse)

Luke Shaw has been described by countless scouts and people who saw him in the youth international tournament, among the best world players of his age.

I don't think it has ever been the case for Bertrand.

Bertrand is average at best.

His composure on the ball is awful, in the final third of the pitch, he's clueless and on defensive duties, he's average.

Many talk about the champion's league final but it's not like he was great that night to contain Robben with Cole.

It's just that Robben was in a " I will shoot everytime I can" without putting a shot on target.

He's not good enough at all which is a shame. Ash is trying his best with him, working with him on a regular basis but i just can't see him ever being good enough unfortunately. We should bring back PVA, i remember seeing him shine against Newcastle in a Carling Cup game a few years ago, his attacking threat is much better than Bertrand's although RB is maybe a better, safer defender. I'd love us to have PVA and Shaw in 2 or 3 years time.

On what evidence do people rate PVA higher than Bertrand? I can't believe it tbh. I distinctly remember the time when Bertrand used to play well and PVA was nowhere to be mentioned. In fact I remember people saying that Bertrand was better overall. Some used to even say he's the best left back prospect in England. Now all of a sudden you want Van Aanholt back without a shred of evidence that he would outshine him and break through here.

I remember when Ryan had his best game against Arsenal, everybody was ejaculating over that. People were calling him to be invited into the English NT and that he's already better than Cole etc etc...

I just don't understand the logic at all. Is the knee jerk really that strong in here?

Dont know much about his national team's preformances but he has been very good for united recently.

Arsenal have Monreal as their starting LB with Gibbs there to do the job against weaker opposition or when for whatever reason Monreal can't start. It was similar when Clichy was there.

I expect Bertrand and Gibbs to always have that same 'back up'/utility role unless they move elsewhere.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though. Plenty players have had wonderful careers as bit-part players. O'Shea, Belletti etc.

Funny thing, the guys at the saints forum thought that Shaw got battered by Moses in the first half and that Bertrand was of our better performers. Not saying I agree as I did not watch the match, just giving you a different perspective.
