Any reliable sources running the arsenal story? Other news?

The reputable Raphael Honigstein on twitter says its basically down to Gustavo agreeing personal terms.

Really annoyed if they get him on the cheap.

Doubt he's going to Arsenal, it is the bloody Metro reporting it. My shoe speaks more sense than that bastarding journalists.

actually he's the one who mentioned Arsenal (in Portuguese while joining the NT)

It's a tricky situation. I'm analyzing what's the best option, what's the best decision for me. I need to play to continue to be fit and be capped (in the NT).

Asked if he talked to Pep: "There isn't much to say. We've talked a few times, but no big deal. It's been more about personal stuff than professional."

Asked about Arsenal: "Premier League is a great competition. Arsenal is historic team (with a lot of tradition). I need a team where I'll be able to play"

We sure need a powerful tempo changing player in midfield, but I dont believe gustavo is that guy. Witsel/Vidal would be perfect but too expensive I guess. Ramires is great but he isnt the best with dictating tempo. If Mvg is ready fine, but other way we should make space for someone ala Vidal and sell Mikel.

110% agree. we need to have more faith lads !

Having faith is one thing but it's another having faith for the sake of it when it's apparent that we need reinforcements in the defensive midfielder department, and someone like Gustavo arguably fits the bill of what we need.

I don't think we'll play much games with a holding position tbh. We'll play with a box to box midfielder (Ramires) then a deep lying playmaker (van Ginkel, possibly Mikel?), can't see us using an actual DM, 4-2-3-1 with an actual holding midfielder these days is very rare. Bayern used Martinez as the box to box and Schewini as the deep lying playmaker last season, Real used Khedira as the box to box with Alonso as the deep lying playmaker...

I think Gustavo was used more as a box to box midfielder last year with Bayern anyway (going on the evidence of his game vs Real Madrid)

Perhaps so but I don't think it would hurt having DM specialist, if you like, as having a proper DM would give us the flexibility in midfield to play several roles. Can't play through every game with the kind of midfield setup you mentioned there and expect to escape unscathed especially in the big games where we have been found hopelessly wanting there. Martinez maybe used as a B2B midfielder but he was also a midfield enforcer/destroyer, which I believe was his primary role last season. Khedira is also more or less in the same case there with Martinez.

A B2B midfielder is usually a destroyer/enforcer as well.
