If that was the case, he would have taken a sabbatical. Gone on for a year and stayed out of the game completely but he didn't want to. He wanted to come back to Chelsea. What you may think as a loss of passion , might just be that the man is 50 now. Last time he came , he was 41 and wanted to conquer the world. Hence was cocky, now he has conquered the world and is now more humble and peaceful. That doesn't mean he has lost his desire, it just means he has grown up and mellowed down.
