He has a decent shot and a sound header of the ball off corner, free kicks..but generally plays deeper.we have enough attack minded midfielders tho so doesn't really matter.like already said he has a good long pass too.

ok, so he's more a Mikel than a Alonzo?

De Rossi is a well rounded midfielder, he's actually quite technically astute. He's got a great passing game, a decent long shot and is a threat in the area from set pieces so he'll be alright offensively but that's not his main game. I don't know why people are desperately looking for an offensive game from a defensive midfielder especially when we have the likes of Hazard, Mata, Oscar, KDB, Schurrle, Moses etc. who can provide the majority of that.

Mikel is actually pretty good offensively, he plays with a lot of freedom when he does play for his national team and you can see that he's actually pretty good offensively, but at Chelsea he has the role of a holding player so he doesn't contribute too much offensively because he's been asked to play so. Simple.

He's not more Mikel or more Alonso. He's De Rossi.

Their is a lot of obsession with balance these days, i know it's important but some take it a step too far, i was earwigging in my course 2 other Chelsea fans debating who should play the number 10 role next season and were discussing who was better defensively out of the Mazacar throughout

I don't see why that is facepalm worthy in all honesty. The role of a 'specialist' is dying out in football and the demand of a player that can do it all is much much higher now. Oscar has more going for him in a tactical sense than Mata. Look at Bayern this year, every player had to contribute to both attack and defence, they didn't need any players in specialist roles because the team as a whole worked as a cohesive unit and covered the space & applied pressure expertly, reminisce of Sacchi's old Milan team.

There's been a growing trend where clubs are now seeking the midfielders that can do it all, and is probably why they are so expensive right now. Just look at Martinez last year, Fernandinho, Witsel, Paulinho, Illarramendi recently.

So true. A perfect example would be Robben.

Well and truly a 'combative midfielder'. He create his own impression.
