Indeed, after watching the game late and already knowing the result, I thought the reaction was more like "get away from me" than anything about hurting the Brighton player. Unfortunately, the kick (more like a push) movement looked pretty bad on slo-mo, so he got red carded.

VAR is WAY overused everywhere. Refs have become over reliant on it. It should only be used for obvious blatant error and nothing else really.

Ah man, I was really loving this brief spell of having all of the permanently wrecked people fit.

On the plus side, club has done fantastic bringing Malo in and we wont miss James that much, aside from on set pieces. Big improvement from the situation a year ago.

More and more grateful everyday that we bought Malo Gusto. Reece’s body type is just not meant to hold up in elite sport I think. The thick, stocky, muscular body type seems prone to injuries. Same thing happening with Luke Shaw.

Not a serious injury, we will see… can’t write it off with this guy though, give it a few weeks or a few games later be another issue.

Not necessarily his fault perhaps but something has got to be wrong with either what we are doing with him training/workload wise or what he is doing away from the club training/workload wise.  Hamstring injuries don’t just repeatedly happen this often.

Galo at RB though - excellent signing and option there. And more comfortable inverting although again, showed time and time again last season he was a real threat on the outside. Lets hope Maresca gets some balance right between him & Cucurella to give both the chance to thrive.

Curious to know if the hamstring injury is on the leg he had surgery on, or the other one.

Following surgery, there was an article with the surgeon who said that the other leg would still be susceptible.

Cuc will end up been the inverted player and we all know it, he's far more suited to the role than both Reece and malo, malo would make an excellent RB that also inverts with cucu to push both Enzo and caicedo or lavia further up the pitch while we have possession as he's so quick he can easily drop back into position.as for the argument Malo and Reece are wasted at the inverted position you may have a point, but what people forget to realise is Enzo plays a certain way and thats why we brought him in, he's not going to change his whole ideology of playing football to suit James or Malo, the only time we will see this is if he put them on the RW, which in games where we wre expected to be defending alot might happen

Chelsea captain Reece James suffers hamstring injury ahead of new season

Chelsea defender Reece James has suffered a setback ahead of the new season after suffering a new hamstring injury.

James felt some discomfort during training at Cobham this week after the team had returned from their pre-season tour of USA.

The 24-year-old has been enjoying a positive summer up until now having started all five of Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies but he has already been ruled out of their final warm-up match against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The hamstring injury has been described by sources at the club, speaking anonymously to the The Athletic to protect relationships, as minor.

Chelsea will err on the side of caution and can afford to take their time with his recovery because he is suspended for the first three games of the season. Malo Gusto, who enjoyed a fine 2023-24, was already being earmarked to play in his absence.

James was given a second red card of the campaign against Brighton & Hove Albion in their penultimate match of last season, which means he was given an automatic four-game ban.

It does, however, put his chances of facing Braga or Servette in Chelsea’s two-legged UEFA Conference League play-off later this month in major doubt. The first leg is on August 22 with the second leg on August 29.

Chelsea are already looking at the first game after the international break, against Bournemouth on September 14th, as a possible return date.

There will be concern that he has complained of another hamstring issue already though. James has sustained a few hamstring injuries over the years which has restricted his game time.

He started just five Premier League games last season after having surgery in December to try and cure a problem in his left leg.

Tony Cascarino is starting to get really concerned about what’s happening with one particular Chelsea star due to his ongoing situation at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca is about to get a virtually fully fit squad with Romeo Lavia fit and available after a period out on the sidelines.

However, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Reece James as he appears to pick up injury after injury for the Blues.

It has been claimed that Chelsea are in no rush to bring James back due to the risk of the injury reoccurring, so it could be even longer now.

This has led to Tony Cascarino raising his concern over the situation involving the defender.

Reece James is arguably one of the best right-backs in the Premier League on his day, which makes it so frustrating for Chelsea fans that he can’t keep himself fit.

Malo Gusto hasn’t been a bad replacement though, and arguably deserves a new deal.

Time is on his side with a contract that is set to run until 2028, but surely there has to be a point where Chelsea just run out of patience.

One man who is also worried about the situation of the defender is Tony Cascarino.

When speaking on TalkSPORT (7:11am), Cascarino claimed that it’s very concerning.

“By the way, Reece James, it must be really concerning what’s happening with Reece James. This hamstring injury has gone on a long time.

“He had a major operation on his hamstring. I hope Reece gets back to full fitness pretty quickly, but this has gone on a hell of a long time.”

Reece James’ injury record at Chelsea

Reece James is currently suffering with a hamstring injury.

The defender has missed a whopping 127 games since 2019, which just goes to show how injury-prone he really is.

It really is a concern to see such a high quality player suffer so much with injuries, and it does make you question when will it end.

The one positive for the Chelsea boss is that Reece James has still been in and around the first-team for games, so at least he’s having some kind of influence off the field.

Would be crazy seeing as this system suits him down to the ground with stepping up into midfield from his Wigan days.

At this point he's gonna have to follow the likes of Loftus-Cheek and go to a league with less intensity, maybe a new start will help him play week in week out. 

Such a shame as well, would have been nice to see an academy player as part of the first team leadership group for years to come!

If you put the new ownership model that precludes dark times, ahead of what actually benefits the club, then yes
