The Conte Thread

The ironic thing here is the club didn't buy Conte's duds but still ended up buying their own duds.

Like Conte would have given Baka and Morata the chances they got if they weren't his idea.

His terrible taste in players will be what prevents him building a legacy anywhere, he'll always be a quick fix manager (all be it an explosively good one).

Yeah Conte is just short term right now.

Trying to win the league does that to you.

TBF, a player's shelf life in Serie A is different to the Premier League or other leagues. Players over 30 may be considered over the hill in the Premier League but they might still thrive in Serie A. We have seen so many players do well late into their 30s over there. So who knows, with the nature of Serie A, Young could do well there under Conte.

Also, I'm not sure you can accuse Conte of his short term thinking in this scenario. Inter have young players and/or players who have not achieved success at the highest level. Young, for example, has won titles at United and played big matches regardless of the mess they both have been in in recent years. Not many players in the current Inter squad have even won a trophy. So from the experience perspective, don't think there's much wrong with bringing Young in. Plus, Inter have their problems with FFP and don't exactly have huge financial to compete with Man City, Barcelona etc to bring in the best (e.g. Barella, Sensi have been two of Inter's best players this season but actually on loan from Cagliari and Sassuolo respectively at the moment). So in some ways, they gotta make do with what's possible for now.

I'm pretty sure Morata wasn't his first choice but anyway, did he really have much of a choice back then? The alternative to Morata was Batshuayi (don't think much needs to be said about him) and Bakayoko...err, nothing.

So Conte reviving Juventus' fortunes and starting their Serie A domination isn't his legacy?

In his last year his quote/excuse for his shit record in the CL "you can't dine in a €100 restruaunt for €10", a year later Allegri gets to the CL final with the same restrictions, and repeats the trick two years later.

There were other options if he was so outraged by Alvaro, he could have asked for Auba or even given Tammy a shot.

As for Baka, if he didn't like him he would have just burnt out Cesc and Kante to prove a point (which is what he ended up doing anyway when he finally gave up on TB14) or would have stuck Luiz or even Christensen in midfield (like how he used the false 9 instead of playing Michy).

That I agree with your point and his European record has always been iffy but did he not revive Juventus' fortunes? Did he not make them relevant and a big club again with the domestic success?

So outraged by Morata? Morata wasn't his first choice but for the first half 2017/18 season, Conte made it work and Morata did well. It was only after that things went downhill. He could have asked for Aubameyang but we all know Conte wants specific type of players in his system and Aubameyang certainly doesn't fit into the bill.

IIRC, he wanted Bakayoko or was okay with him but he wanted to slowly integrate him while still keeping Matic around. But once we sold him, Conte had to throw him in straight away. If anything, Loftus-Cheek could have been kept around that season instead of being loaned out to Palace.

Lukaku: Conte told me I was trash in front of the whole Inter team

Lol I hate how sensitive football players have become. This is something completely normal.

I remember playing basketball as a teenager it was normal to receive verbal abuse from the coach.

Probably a small fraction of what Ferguson or Clough did back in the day. Even Mourinho prior to 2010.

Can't remember for what it was but IIRC, Conte did something similar to Buffon at Juventus.

Something along the lines of Buffon was talking to club executives about championship winning bonuses as they had already won the league, although the season wasn't over. Not sure if it was season they went unbeaten or not.

  • 2 weeks later...

Conte"At Chelsea, I won the Premier League in the first year and the FA Cup in the second year," he said.

"Klopp hasn't won anything yet in England after four years and Guardiola didn't win anything in his first year."

Peak Conte is excellent Conte. The 2016/17 league season was one of the most enjoyable seasons, IMO.

It was amazing, we played some lovely stuff, proper Chels footy I love. Fast direct with purpose and very very hard to break down. He is only 3pts behind Juve, a squad that is far far better in quality.
