Speaking of waste of time, if this Stones is not going to go anywhere, we might as well just use someone from our academy and utilise that money on someone else.

preaching to the choir mate. fuck the academy. atleast start with dropping iva , playing azpi as a RB and zouma (who has been quite good everytime he has played) in our defence. show some fucking balls jose.

40mln for this boy is just..... And I thought 20mln are too much for him :D I'm now completely against this transfer. He is good and young prospect, but I can't believe that Everton want so much money for him. The board should spend this money for a quality CM and RW and I'm sure they will spend even less for these 2 players than only for 1 defender.
Just play Zouma alongside JT this season.

Pay £35-40m now or watch him have a fantastic year and kill it at the Euro's and his price becomes £50-60m and we have ZERO chance of ever signing him.

It's basically now or never.

When United or City get him for 50m next summer the same people posting '40m? lmao' now will turn around and say we should have signed him when we had the chance.

Yep. Just like Luke Shaw who has looked fantastic for United so far this season.

Chelsea’s pursuit of John Stones is complicated by a sell-on clause which could earn Barnsley a windfall of around £5million.

The League One club are entitled to 15 per cent of the fee if Stones leaves Everton, a clause inserted into the transfer when he left Oakwell for £3m, two years ago.

Jose Mourinho is anxious to prise the 21-year-old defender from Goodison Park before the transfer window closes at the end of this month and convinced he is ready to step straight into the team.

How many players would cost you 50 mil though? Let alone CBs because Stones would be the first one.

I don't understand this desperation for Stones tbh. Is it the English thing? As if he's somehow Chelsea last chance at an Englishman in the team. Before Stones and Shaw, it was the likes of Smalling, Jones, Rodwell, Chamberlain, Walcott etc. There will be others.

I don`t believe there is a law that states all transfer requests from players must be shared with the media. behind closed doors he may have already said he would like to join Chelsea. it may just not be his style to use the media to get what he wants, which when we are talking about a player we wish to sign as a longterm player,is a good quality to have. rather than a case of him having no ambition. Martinez has alluded to the fact that Stones is interested in us if you read between the lines.

we handled this transfer badly from the start and have been playing catch up ever since.we pissed off Everton and they are therefore playing harder ball that they would have..but I think we will get him eventually.

The market is crazy, it's pointless comparing to what's gone on before because those times will never return. Every passing window the prices go up a level you wouldn't think they would touch, but it happens anyway. With stuff like the new deal kicking in next season, this will continue. So for one of the top handful good young English players out there it's not unreasonable to think Everton would ask for such a price.

It's not an English thing (for me, anyway) .. we were always going to need a proactive centre back and while we probably can hold off on a signing in this position for this season, I suppose if the club thinks we better address the situation now when there appears to be no competition, why not go for it? Looking at the alternatives there are the likes of Varane (impossible), Gimenez (Atleitco drive a hard bargain too) and Laporte (release clause of about 35m and I admit Idk much about him because hey, I don't have time to watch Athetic) ... no distinctly better option out there in that age bracket. There's always going to be some English tax but we can afford it.

Prices will drive up but I don't think we've reached the point where young CBs cost you 40-50 mil. I know Di Maria is older, but he is an attacking player, a worldwide known name, and his 44 mil deal to PSG is the biggest transfer this window.

I don't think Everton are doing anything wrong. They don't want to sell so it's their right to drag this on as long as they want (to the clear dismay of Chelsea fans haha).

If it's not the English factor then fine. There are others, like those you have mentioned. I'm sure they won't cost you this much though. Though if Stones does end up joining for 40-50 mil, there will be a shift and the prices will go up.
