John Stones

Sterling.

I think you also have to look at England in isolation, even more so the top English clubs. They have more to spend than everyone bar Bayern and the big 2 in Spain, especially when it comes to English players. Even Arsenal paid £16m for Chambers, ffs. I'm not saying Stones isn't overpriced, I just think the extra 5 or 10 million won't hurt us when we're getting a good, versatile, HG player who will contribute straightaway and hopefully kick on to be a key member looking ahead.

I don't have an issue with the price. I think he's well overpriced but that's not why I replied to your post.

You said we could regret not signing him. I don't think there would ever be a need to regret potentially not signing Stones as other talents will pop up.

I also don't think it's necessary to sign a very young CB. People go on about '10 years of service' but even 5 years is a very, very long time in football.

Not necessary, but a tremendous value add, wouldn't you agree? The probability of developing into a much better player, forming lasting links with other younger members of the squad (Zouma), embracing the club culture, fan relationships, providing stability when managers inevitably come and go ...

It's a little bit like Ferdinand with United, sure they made him the most expensive English defender at the time, but it paid off and looking back it was an investment that paid off several times over. Not comparing them as players but I can certainly see the appeal that it has. But of course, football is unpredictable and some risks will always be there.

My point about the regret bit was in regards mainly to the competition. If you feel he is overvalued now, think what will happen a year on when the Mancs come calling. Other players will emerge no doubt but every potential signing will have things going for and against it - that should not stop us seizing the chance that we have at this moment.

All fair points.

Personally I'm not too bothered about this saga. Whether he joins or not, I'm fine with both outcomes. Unless he becomes the new Alessandro Nesta. I'd shed a manly tear if that happened.

Everton have reportedly agreed a fee for River Plate defenderRamiro Funes Mori, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Blues are monitoring the defender with a view to bring him in as competition to Phil Jagielka and John Stones, and reports suggest they are a step closer to bringing the Argentina international to Goodison Park.

man united would say the same thing.

what would chelsea do with stones, they have JT and GC and zouma and iva.

he has far far far better chance starting at united than starting at chelsea cos of his skills not just transfer fee.
