If Juventus play hard ball with De Ligt it does present a serious problem of consideration if he is, as it would seem, the number one choice at centre back for the club.

Do you move on to another target that you're possibly less enthused about and still pay big money? Bearing in mind an opportunity will come up again on De Ligt next summer if he refuses to extend with Juventus because he'll only have one year on his contract at that point.

I don't like the idea of moving for targets lower down the list, it's something we should be moving away from as we've been burnt this way countless times, none more so than Lukaku last summer. But in this situation it's easier said than done to remain patient when we do need some sort of defensive reinforcement this summer.

Just a note regarding Skriniar. I like him but no way on earth should we be willing to pay what Inter are asking for him as he has one year left on his deal. If City end up selling Jesus and Sterling for around the £50m mark in the same contract situation, there's no way Skriniar represents any value whatsoever at 70-80m.

I am with you. No signings unless they're option 1 or option 1 and 2 if we need two of them in a particular position. I am personally sick to the back teeth for watching us spunk £100's of millions on absolutely wank players like Lukaku, Baka, Bats, Kepa etc (players even I could see prior to us signing them were not what we needed.)

If worst comes to worst, just roll with the academy players and wait until we can get the players we want. No more batsh*t cray, cray signings for the sake of it, even if that means zero signings.

Dembele or Raphinha?

I would probably slightly lean Dembele myself because his potential is outrageous and he can play on either wing. But if we end up with Sterling & Raphinha, two PL proven players who would need zero adaptation, I’d be more than content.

It's a much harder situation than usual in this circumstance I can fully understand because we've lost a couple of defenders in the window.

But if the first choice option wasn't available then I'd rather us focus on a first choice option for right wing back that can genuinely rotate and compete with Reece James and then presents an option to play Reece in the back 3 during the season. We could also just put the block on any deal that involves Azpi leaving as well.

I just don't want us buying our 4th or 5th choice option because we're desperate and still having to sink £40-50m to buy them anyway.

They know we are desperate for CBs so they will charge over the odds.

This is a problem we're going to face in the CB market. Either overpay, get someone not good enough or go without.

Personally, with MDL I think there is a deal to be made. Juve aren't going to want to go to his last year at his age (at 22 it is no hardship for him to see the deal out and sign on a free elsewhere at 24.) We also have a few players that would do well in Italy and they have been linked with; Jorgi, Werner and Ziyech.

I think the hold up is Juve trying to source another CB as they're also think there. They do that, then I expect a cash plus player deal. My money would probably be on Jorgi (even if there hasn't been direct links yet) as I can't see them taking on Werner's wages.

Player values will vary slightly but essentially £40-45m + one of Jorginho, Pulisic, Werner in my opinion should be fair game and would place a value on De Ligt somewhere around £70-80m. I'd happily do a deal that throws Emerson into the mix too.

With that money Juventus could look at someone like Koulibaly or Bremer to replace De Ligt and they get an extra player to slot straight into their team. I think they'd have less worry buying someone like Koulibaly at 31 because he could probably comfortably play in Serie A for a few more years.

I've got a feeling that we may only end up with the one CB. James then shifts to RCB. That'll give us:

MDL, James, Silva, Trev, Colwill and Dave (TBC).

For me, I think if Raphinha comes in, he'll play RWB, which is why I am buying the links as he is equipped to play that position with his workrate and it solves us trying to buy 2 CB's in one market.

Exactly, this all makes sense. I think the key is Juve finding a CB to replace MDL.

In my opinion £48M max + Werner for MDL is fair. Juve need to sell now or lose him for a lower fee or even free in the future. Also keep in mind that MDL wants Juve to lower his release clause first before they can start negotiating a new deal, the key is how low of a release clause is he asking for... If its lower than what we are offering then the smart thing to do is to sell him now.

Not really sure about Raphinha at RWB - do you think he's defensively good enough to play there?

Either way, if we did bring Raphinha and Sterling in for Werner and Ziyech I think that's a significant upgrade in the attacking options.

I think he is probably the best option. I am not sold on that 29 year old from France who has had one good year. For me, Raphinha has enough of the characteristics to play RWB. Problem may be aerial more than anything (which may be why MDL is now looking like our first option) as he doesn't mind putting his foot in and he gets through a lot of yards. I am still hoping Livra gets brought back next year if he recovers from his injury, so Raphinha's flexibility in being able to move to AM is helpful.

so we are going to 4 at the back with these wingers?

That’s what I’m curious about. But if we buy 2 new CB’s for huge money and switch to a back 4 where does that leave arguably our best defender over the past 2 years Thiago Silva? In a year with a midseason WC he’ll want to be playing every match in order to stay ready and sharp. He has been publicly dreaming about his final WC for a while now. Would be cruel to bench him now.
