New signing has visted Ashley Cole at home, to discuss how to fill his shoes

Chilwell signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge worth £190,000 a week

It has been six years since Ashley Cole left Chelsea and Ben Chilwell will become the fifth left-back to attempt to fill his boots.

Chelsea have spent a staggering £121.3 million on trying to find the right replacement for Cole and, priced at £50m, Chilwell is comfortably the most expensive of the options the club have turned to.

Cole has proved to be the most difficult of his golden era of Chelsea players to replace, which underlines just how good he was.

John Terry has no doubt been missed, never more so perhaps than in the opening 30 minutes at the Hawthorns last weekend, but Gary Cahill and David Luiz both softened the blow of the former captain’s departure before the centre of Chelsea’s defence became an issue again.

For all their current goalkeeping problems, Chelsea found a top-class replacement for Petr Cech in Thibaut Courtois. Even Frank Lampard did not prove to be irreplaceable as Cesc Fabregas came in and offered something different. And Eden Hazard took over the goalscoring burden.

Chelsea’s strikers have been hit and miss since Didier Drogba left Stamford Bridge the first time, but Diego Costa, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham have between them offered the club superb value for money and scored vital goals.

Marcos Alonso has been the best of the pretenders to Cole’s left-back crown, having arrived for £16m four years ago with people wondering why Chelsea were signing a former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland player.

The Spaniard fitted well into Antonio Conte’s system as a wing-back, but he has always been defensively suspect in a four-man back line, as was again brutally highlighted in the first half against West Bromwich Albion.

Many would argue that Chelsea’s best left-back since Cole’s departure has been right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, who filled in there following the arrival of Filipe Luis in 2014. Such was the success of Azpilicueta on the left that Luis returned to Atletico Madrid after just one season.

Baba Rahman has made just 15 Premier League appearances over five years since being signed for £21.7m from Augsburg, while Emerson Palmeiri, who joined in January 2018 for £17.6m, has also struggled to make an impact.

So Chelsea and Lampard need Chilwell to succeed and it is encouraging that he arrived on the recommendation of Cole, who now works at Chelsea and remains close to head coach Lampard.

Chelsea weighed up going for cheaper alternatives to Chilwell, but cutting costs on the position has proved to be a false economy in the past and the club eventually put their faith in the opinion of Lampard and Cole.

Chilwell has already visited Cole’s home since joining Chelsea to discuss what life is like at the club, how to make a success of his time there and what he needs to improve on.

An injury prevented him from taking part in the first three Premier League games, but Lampard will be looking for Chilwell to hit the ground running and prove that there is life after Cole for a Chelsea left-back.
