Alexandre Pato

Guus appeared to shut this down during today's media conference.

When the subject of Pato was raised the coach talked about his existing striking options, mentioned the availability of some kids who can fill in the gaps and then said, "We don't need to do anything there. [recruiting strikers]" I know that some don't regard Pato as a striker but Guus seemed to.

Leaving aside the possibility that Guss does not know what the club is planning, or is deliberately creating some misdirection, this comment seems to be a blow for  the hopes of those who would like to see Pato join. Given his previous straight bat approach to questions about transfer speculation, the mere fact that the coach chose to engage with the question this time suggests the club are keen to distance themselves form Pato.

If not injured he could be world class.

He's never been world class. He doesn't convert at a high enough rate for me.

I said he could be, one of my fav teams is Milan. I've watched every game he's been in, this guy had tremendous potential and was once one of the best strikers.

His goal against Barca and many more were incredible.

everyone talks about that goal against Barca... Like I said his conversion rate is not very good. Even with his pace back he still misses an awful lot.

Pato is in top form, but thats Brazilian league, so doesn't mean that much.

he's in top form as Torres got in top form for us...

after 50 muscle injuries his top form for us was about 70% of his top form at pool... Pato at Milan could be any player on pace... not anymore.

And yes, the brazilian league is on the slow side - seira A style - so Pato will struggle.

Seemed a bluff to me. Was only 2-3 days ago he said Bamford needs to prove himself in the U21 first and we cant afford to be short upfront again if we get an injury to remy or Costa with Falcao already out.  Has publicly admitted in past week we are discussing options with regards to a striker coming in. Abraham is absolutely nowhere near ready, hasnt even had a loan yet to play a decent level of football and not U21.

Thought Guus acted coy and either the club are signing him as their choice, not Guus' (think hector and papy), or he trying to avoid stoking the fire.  I expected him to bat it away as he has done every other striker mentioned.

Ah, interesting to read an alternative take. I still feel he was being genuine however and that the new line could reflect that we have been turned down by our striking targets. Certainly that would add some perspective to what Guss said about the there being a new reality in the transfer market for Chelsea. Not so new I'd guess.

Meanwhile, I agree with you about Tammy and I agree with Guss about Patrick.

Having read the media tonight...I'm inclined to think the 'youngsters filling the gaps' was more to do with other positions apart from striker as he name dropped Christian atsu and traore. Who are both wingers.   His Bamford comments make no sense otherwise and neither do his comments about us needing more options upfront to avoid being in danger should Costa or re my be injured .   Weird one

Pato is preferably; on his accord a winger. A wide-forward, if you will; capable of playing as a centre. It has been reiterated constantly. Pato would cover several positions if signed, limiting time to both the younger strikers and wingers.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what to believe because the Brazilian  media are convinced that we are close to getting him.  Think it may be a emenalo choice come to think of it and I don't see Bamford getting a look in and falcao is not wanted imo
