Fernando Torres

I don't think anyone's deluded, many people including myself are just tired of moaning about him, i'd rather wish for the best instead of bringing up his many faults.

That's why i'm optimistic about his future with CFC.

I am sure Liverpool fans think like that as well.....See we ain't much different then they are now aren't we? :D

Firstly, it's not as if he won it all by himself.

Of course not, but he at least played a part in all of them. Unlike the 2010 WC where he did nothing of note and got a medal.

Anyway he ended the season in much better form than we've seen from him in a Chelsea shirt - sure most of the goals were against not so good opposition (Inb4TorontoChelsea ), but he wasn't even scoring against those in his first 6-7 months as a Chelsea player.

Then he went on to score 4 goals in 7 games for Spain. So i'm quietly confident in him doing better next season, especially with the new players we've gotten/are getting.

(Still think we need another striker though)

That's fine but I see a lot of posts implying that the Torres of old is back. Not saying that he definitely wont reach that level again but there's been very little evidence to suggest that. His improved confidence is a good sign but goal scoring wise he's shown nothing extraordinary, especially in any consistent period.

Mostly agree with you!

I do think though that if we sign a high profile striker it'll be the end of Torres at Chelsea. Doubt he'll be willing to play under those circumstances. It would be better for all parties to just move on and cut our losses. He has decent market value right now.

However I'm not sure if I'd be willing to settle for anyone other than Cavani, he's a beast!

Our crucial games this season in the run up to those 2 trophies were Valencia, Napoli x2, barca x2, spurs, Liverpool and Bayern. He didn't start a single one. He didn't even come on as a substitute in some of them, including the FA Cup final. He wasn't trusted by Spain to start either. He only started two (?) games.

Thats because we had the ultimate big game player in Drogba! had we had RVP, Aguero, Gomez, Ibrahimovic, Rooney, Benzema ect in the team and had to pick one to start as the main striker Drogba would get picked ahead of any of them every time because of what he does in the big games! and as for Spain because they love to over-pass the ball instead of playing early balls through to the striker, when teams park the us against them there is just no space for the striker because Spain take to long with their passing, so its better for them in certain games to play without a striker. So thats really a cheap argument to use against Torres.

It is less about why he did not start those games and more about why using the argument that Torres won those trophies to try to prove that he is back to his old self is invalid. By that logic, Kalou is very close to Torres's best as well

i disagree, torres is not like kalou

kalou is a winger and the jobs is to give chances to the striker

not to selfish and score by them self

Completely besides the point. The idea I was trying to convey is that, in football, you can't assess a player's level based solely on the silverware he wins.

One thing for certain is that he still has a lot to prove. Next season could be the biggest season of his whole career because if he can't get 20 goals with those players with him, he'll never score prolificly again. Another thing for certain is that he did look better towards the back end of the season and in the Euro's, despite not having many chances, he scored goals and got himself into positions to score. If he was an unknown player, having the 18 months as he had, i would be calling for his head, i'd want him gone but with Torres, we all know what he can do, we know what he's capable of doing with a football, running at defenders and we know that there are goals in him, left foot, right foot, head, he's got great technique. We all know him and we all know what he can do. I will back him until his Chelsea career is over because i really want him to succeed here.

He should be feeling good now, he now needs to really forget about the previous 2 campaigns and let his Chelsea career take off now. I'm desperate for him to do well here and i'm sure (ish), next season will be his season.

Choulo already mentioned the main point I was trying to make, and also like I said, Kalou and Bertrand were trusted more than Torres to play in the "defensive winger" role. Torres always played as a winger cum striker when he came on as a sub and if Drogba was still on and we were looking for a goal. And that's indeed what happened in the 82nd minute. So he could have started in that position itself but Di Matteo believed that his added attacking benefit compared to playing Kalou/Bertrand would be far outweighed by the latters' defensive contribution.

So I get what you're trying to say regarding the formation that we played in Munich and the style of football that Spain use but especially regarding us, he simply did not provide enough to justify his inclusion in starting line-ups in big games. That's what I meant.
