Unfortunently the media have far too much power in the country, if they said Drogba was not a big game player half the nation would follow and say the same.

Saying he should of gone was premature, he has great qualities but also has moments of pure madness. When I say madness I mean basic decisions so in all if he alleviates this from his game and can be what he wants IMO.

Super goal last night and has all the potential to be club captain in the future.

He was making a fair number of mistakes and there were rumours that Barca were interested in a bid for him, so people said that maybe it was best that he moved on. I don't think any person on here 'never got behind him', but just expressed concern at his suitability to this league.

I probably was, but the guy has really upped his performances and that's a fantastic sign going forward. I also said I didn't think he'd be suitable as a future captain, but in the last couple of months he's emerged as a real leader in the team and been someone we rely on.

I've been massively impressed with the way he's carried himself in the second-half of the season and I'll hold my hands up and admit that he's shown stuff I didn't know he had, but there were reasons why people were expressing concerns about him.

Is it time for Terry to pass the armband over to Luiz?

Terry isn't going to be starting every game anymore. He just isn't. His legs can't do it even if his huge heart wants him to. He'll probably play much more than he has this season should Mourinho return during the Summer and likely partner Luiz, though, which is good for everyone, since with or without an armband, he'll remain a leader. What we need now though is a consistent leader. Not just consistent in form (which Luiz has improved on) but consistent in communicating with his players on the pitch, showing his passion each and every game (which Terry does) but most importantly, consistently starting games. This is important as it makes the captain a staple authority amongst the other players. If you have a captain in and out of the team constantly you're less likely to hold him in such a high regard.

I hate goalkeepers being captains at clubs which rules out Cech for me. I just feel like a captain should be one who leads by example on a pitch, and being stuck to your spot like a tree for the majority of the game as a top 'keeper in a top team doesn't exactly beam confidence and 'swagger' to other players.

Lampard is leaving (we think), and while he's been very important to our spine over the years, as Peace posted not too long ago, he's demonstrated in various games this season and last that he's not exactly a leader on the pitch - just a highly respected player. So even if he does stay, I wouldn't want him being captain. Again, he wouldn't be starting consistently either.

So, my reasons for Luiz being named captain for next season are the following: He plays consistently. His form is finally consistent. It looks like he'll be getting the armband at some point, so we may as well get it on him as soon as possible so he can build his leadership & communicating skills to an even higher level. He's loved by fans. He's a good role model both on and off the pitch. He's passionate. He seems like the loyal type. You never see him not trying his best. His emotional connection to the club is already evident as shown by plenty tears of both joy and sadness in his time here already. He's an important member of his National Team and is quickly becoming, if not already one of, our very finest players. And you know what else? It looks like he's about to enter his prime.

It could be argued, and probably will be, that Mata, Cole and even Mikel should be considered - but with Cole looking likely to leave after next season I don't see that working; Mata seems more the deputy type & Mikel splits opinion too much.

I guess it's not even up for that much debate whether Luiz should or shouldn't be our next captain - I think it's pretty obvious he should be as he's the only proper candidate after Cech. (Cech's positives are he seems like a role model and speaks many languages almost perfectly.)

But for the reasons I mentioned, does anyone else feel he should become our captain next season, even with Terry still here? Of course many on here love Terry, myself included, and the majority probably want him to remain captain as long as he's at our club, but sometimes you just have to take sentiment and tradition out of the equation and do what's better for the long-term.

I'd propose something like - Luiz ©, Terry (vc), Cech (vc2), Mata (vc3). for next season.

All that makes sense, but JT will still be club captain in my opinion.

Funnily enough I'd pick the same three players you did. Cech is a senior player, he's smart and he communicates effectively with his teammates. I don't have a massive objection to keepers being captain but it does make communication with the refs tricky and that's one of the most important jobs of a captain. They need to manage refs and that's one of the reasons I like Mata as skipper. He's intelligent, he's respectful, he's respected but he can seem a little shy at times. He might be a little too cerebral for the role and not have the oomph that we're used to with JT.

Luiz is still a little suspect for me. Yes he's grown in stature this year and I can imagine him having the armband when just last year such a thing seemed nonsensical, but he's still got that little bit of maturing to do. That shoulder charge against Brentford and even the elbow on Connor Wickham against Sunderland suggest he's got that recklessness still. I love the enthusiasm but it has to be controlled enthusiasm but he's shown an ability to learn from his weaker points though so I reckon he's got a good shout in a year's time.

I don't think we should address the captaincy issue till JT leaves because captain doesn't need to play every game. Also, Cole signed a 2-year contract right? I would love to see Cole get the armband if JT leaves at the end of next season

about David Luiz, if you'd asked at the start of the season, many of us - myself included - would've said 'Definitely No' but now i will say 'maybe'. still not convinced
