Roman Abramovich has dramatically relinquished the running of Chelsea in an attempt to distance the club from the controversy surrounding him as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and calls for him to be sanctioned.

Abramovich will remain as Chelsea’s owner and, providing he is not sanctioned, can still invest money into the club, but he has handed the running and decision making to the trustees of the club's charitable foundation, which is headed by Bruce Buck.

In his statement to announce the change, Abramovich made no mention of the war in Ukraine and did not condemn the actions of Russia president Vladimir Putin, which could lead to more calls for him to face sanctions.

Other than Buck, the trustees include manager of Chelsea women, Emma Hayes, chief executive ofKick It Out Piara Power, along with Paul Ramos,John Devine and Sir Hugh Robertson.

Chelsea remain insistent that the club is not and will not be for sale, but the move is likely toencourage interested groups and individuals to test Abramovich’s resolve with takeover bids.

Football decisions, such as transfers, player contracts and the future of head coach Thomas Tuchel will be the responsibility of director Marina Granovskaia and technical and performance advisor Petr Cech. Neither Granovskaia nor Cech are among the trustees.

Chelsea insist that Abramovich’s decision to step back has not been made in an attempt to avoid sanctions, but instead to protect the club at a time when it was in danger of suffering reputational and strategic damage.

In a statement, Abramovich said: "During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

"I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans."

Very sensible move. Roman prevents us to be affected by sanctions and allows for continued operation of the club even if he himself will be targeted.

It is however unlikely he will fund us in summer in case sanctions persist, which i consider the base case. So we might be forced to pay for new signings exlusively out of the club's own cashflows.

You couldn't actually ask for a better owner than Roman when ut comes to the running of a club. He is a legend in his own right within the World of football.

I hope he has no dealings with the current situation between Russia and Ukraine. It would cast am enormous shadow over what has been an incredible time basking in the sun.

The west are targeting Roman for his relationship to  Mr Putin . Our golden age is built on Romans leadership and with our bond , remember you are seeing much propaganda . All of these journalists and pundits baying for the blood of Roman (figuratively) is one thing. It’s almost understandable given the horrible situation in Ukraine.

But all these assholes almost begging for action against our club itself are disgusting. Why the fuck should the players, the coaches, the staff, and most importantly the tens of millions of supporters be punished at all? 

Nearly every one of these billionaire club owners is a shady, scummy fuck. Newcastle were allowed to be taken over by the state that murdered a journalist, ffs. 

If the UK government somehow, some way punishes the club I’m absolutely done with this sport forever. If worst comes to worst, forcing Roman to sell would suck but it would be understandable. Fucking over everyone else who had ZERO to do with anything is outrageous.

The relationship to Putin is tenuous to say the least.
He even gave up his Russian citizenship so as not to be associated with Russia.
And what about the true Putin boys, Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage ?
Sounds like the hype of the century to me.
In any anti-Putin country I would accept it as a harsh overreaction but within the logic of the situation.
But in Putin's brexit Britain ????
