Yes and Mikel was in one . Do you remember how useless Ramires was v Fulham? There is a theme here ,think about it . And who was subbed on Saturday and I quote Jose "because there was a big problem in the first half ,we were too deep".

I think what he meant is our inability to play down the flanks due to Ramires being there, not cause of Mikel. Both the players have almost the same percentage's of heat in central midfield and deep midfield. The lack of width was also a problem, cause of Paulinho's ability to narrow our game. Barely think it's either Lampard's or Mikel's fault that were playing deep. If we had a proper winger like Willian or Schurrle, we could have been a bit better, but Jose went for defense first and played Ramires. Didn't turn out well in hindsight though.

Actually I could see what Jose was going for by starting Rami on the wing. He wanted us to play deep so that Tottenham's back four would push up then play the ball behind Naughton who is much slower than Rami. And we obviously tried to do that before the goal but it did not go well at all for a few reasons: The first, is that the long balls, especially by Lampard, were not good and were either over hit or under hit. Secondly, Dawson quickly caught on after the first 5 minutes and started covering the area behind Naughton. And third and most importantly is that Jose forgot about Torres's tendency to drift to the right wing when he's not getting the ball in the middle. He did way too often in the first half and thus attracted a defender to the place behind Naughton where Rami is supposed to run into. I think it would have worked much better with Schurrle who may not be as fast as Rami, but would have the instinct and natural tendency to drift inside and exploit the gap between Vertongen and Dawson created by Torres moving to the wing like he did in the chance where he went one-on-one with Lloris.

On topic, Lampard had very little to do with how deep we play, so did Mikel or even Rami. It had more to do with Tottenham than us. It's simply that AVB set up Tottenham in the second half to play and press deeper to defend the lead instead of going for a second because he knew his team could not keep up the pressure they put in the first half for 90 minutes and because he probably thought they had a better chance scoring a second by inviting us forward and playing on the counter.

you expanded on what I said perfectly. :P

Last year he had a smaller role than now, and when people said a contract extension was wise, it was primarily about his leadership abilities and his professional attitude that could rub off on the younger players. Gamewise it was expected that his role would diminish further.

No way could it have been expected that he'd suddenly once again be a starting XI player. In one of the most crucial positions of the team. If you compare him to the players that other top teams have in that position, it's quite embarrassing, really.

Embarrassing? Your having a laugh we are so lucky to have such a wonderful player who gives 100% every game. The club and team wouldn't be the same without him. I am embarrassed for you that you said that.

New season, hectic schedule, strong opponents and Mou has relied on Lamps's experience to launch our campaigns, rightly so. With the quality of opposition to diminish and Lampard being rested more often I think he can keep up physically when called upon.

Yes and was reduced to a much lesser role because he coudn't play 3 times a week.

He was still playing 35 times a year so it wasn't reduced much. We definitely need to upgrade at CM but the grief Lampard gets has been ridiculous for the last few years. This year so far, according to Sqwuaka, Lampard is 4th in overall performance, 4th in shot accuracy, 7th in chances created, 4th in defensive duels won (62%), 2nd in average pass length, 8th in passing percentage, etc...Yes, we need to upgrade and Lampard gets worse if he plays too much, but he's hardly the hole in the team people seem to want to believe.

Aye, all grief and criticism aimed at Lord Lamps is at times ridiculous. Some people act like he is at Titus Bramble levels of embarrassing. Though to be honest I don't think I've ever criticised Lamps in my life and I probably never will.

I'd be the Leader of Legend Lords Lamps Legislature. I wanted to alliterate but I was really struggling, so leave me alone!

Yes all good stuff ,but what really makes a player is slow sideways passes at a 90% pass completion rate in a match that we lose or draw as often as we win.

Lampard could do with a rest tonight ,but who plays in a game we need to win ? Mikel and Rammy stinks.

Not to mention van Ginkel is injured.

Oscar is untested in the CM position.

McEachran is wasted youth.

De Bruyne is unfavoured

Michael Essien is a shadow.

David Luiz is out of his element.

Looking very thin and quite worrying in the midfield.

No-one is questioning his commitment, or his merits as a player. His value as an icon of the identity of this club goes without saying - which is why everyone wanted Lamps to stay.

My remark concerns his current ability to carry a midfield, both qua power, speed, and stamina, and definitely in the big games. I don't think at his age, that he brings enough to midfield to compete with the big clubs. I hope you're not too embarrassed by that.
