TorontoChelsea 4,064
I actually hate how extra time is given. The first half is always 1 minute and if there's an injury, a red card, or a couple of goals, maybe you'll get 2 minutes. Second half is always 3 or 4 minutes except in rare occasions. I remember reading that the amount of time the ball is actually in play is about 60 minutes in a game. Either way, I actually think extra time should be generally longer than it is. Especially, when you've had 6 changes, 4 bookings, 2 goals, 3 minor injuries, and about 5 minutes of time wasting in a half and then you get 4 minutes of extra time. It's really just a convention that just makes no sense. I'd just rather see more actual football. The Rising Sun
Milan 17,956
By the way, it intrigues me that the last time they lost 2-3 at home (to Blackburn last season) they played away to Newcastle in the next game and lost 3-0. I suggest people watch Sky Sports on Sunday to see what happens when they play Newcastle this time!
Gily 37
Been saying this a long time, they should stop the clock when someone is fouled or the ball goes out of bounds. No more argueing over unfair extra time, and a lot less players faking injuries, I don't see any downsides for this except an investment in timers like in basketball but if you only use these rules in the topleagues/cups then it's not even a small dent in their budget. Ollie 4,400
They top the clock in Rugby so why not football? It makes a lot of sense to me, then blow the whistle when it gets to 90 when the ball next goes dead. It worries me that Rugby is so far ahead of football. In rugby they only stop the clock for long stoppages not when the ball goes out of play. In football if the clock was stopped each time theball went out of play games would last almost FOUR hours

Ollie 4,400
They're useless, they just guess. 1 minute in the first half and 4 in the 2nd. The best i ever saw though was 1 at the end of the 2nd half when we knocked Arsenal out the UCL in '04. Ok it wasn't english officials but i will never forget that moment the 4th official put "1"

The way I see it, there are two decent ways to do it. 1) As you mention, just stopping the clock every time there is a significant stoppage or 2) Having an official whose job it is to calculate that time (basically stopping and starting a stop-watch whenever there is a delay) and then giving that amount of time as extra time. The current system just makes no sense.
