Mouri_Matic 560
There are plenty of decent number 2s out there, you just have to look across the PL and you'll see that. United have Lindegaard, City have Pantillimon, Spurs have Friedel, Arsenal have Fabianski, Stoke have Sorensen, QPR had Rob Green... That's just from the top of my head as well. There is no reason we shouldn't be able to find a competent 2nd choice goalkeeper, especially one that's better than Turnbull. But is he going to stay for one year only? Would anyone accept that? Cech and Courtois will always be ahead of him from 2013-14 no matter who he is.
KonohasOrangeFlash 2,607
Actually we are if Marin and Torres are sold/loan out. Backup gk is NOT NEEDED, Blackman can play there and we will recall Courtois next season so seem pretty silly to buy a GK who will only stay for one season and play cup matches. We will get a DM too, Van Ginkel is one himself in case you didn't know...CB there are a few around and we will probably get one like Mangala. CF is Jovetic/Gomez/Cavani, we will get one of them too no matter what. So we will hit all these targetsYeahhhhhhh....I don't see that happening... gr123 167
So £53m for another striker and people are begging Roman to get his credit card out again.. Has nobody learnt anything from Torres, Shevchenko?! Hell, even Drogba was shit for a while. Throwing obscene amounts of money at a player doesn't guarantee anything. Sick of it to be honest. dave30 and The only place to be

Peace. and Tomo

Like many have already said, Cavani is at his peak right now unlike the previous 2 examples you said who were both going down hill. Madrid made many mistakes like Kaka, Owen and a shit load of others. If they were afraid like us they would have never been able to sign the likes of Zidane, Ronaldo and so on....My point is no one here is asking us to go back to 2003 spending and buy 11 new players, we all want to have a top class striker in our book and even if Cavani and Schurrle are the only 2 signings this summer we will make, almost everyone will be satisfy with it. And it is not like the club don't want him either, we already bid £45-£50m for him anyway, if we see him that good why not go like £5m-£10m more to seal the deal because it is not like we don't have cash. We are not talking about signing Messi for £250m.

I'm not saying we should copy Arsenal but there's a middle ground between chasing £50 million strikers and shopping in the bargain bins, and the funny thing is we seem to be pretty fucking good at spotting value. Mata was relatively cheap but he's been a revelation. Azpi was about £7 million but it's conceivable that we've locked up the right-back spot for the next five years, maybe more. Then there's the likes of De Bruyne and Courtois who are worth at least triple what we bought them for. Even Lukaku looks like being a bargain in hindsight. Personally I'd be happy never going above the fee we paid for Hazard in terms of marquee signings, whilst continuing the policy of buying young and looking to develop that talent both in-house and through loan deals. If you look at our record transfer fees over the last 20 or so years, it doesn't look good for Cavani. We've broken the record to sign Fleck, Furlong, Casiraghi, Sutton, Hasselbaink, Drogba, Shevchenko and Torres.FOUR of those players were arguably unmitigated flops, two were meh (Casiraghi's injury was harsh and Sutton was shit, but we managed to sell him on for only a £4 million loss). Hasselbaink was a success in a weird period for us and Drogba became something of a legend BUT in his first two seasons, when we won the league no less, he scored less than a dozen league goals in each. Lukaku scored 17 last season. Why do you care about profit? the only person who should care about profit at Chelsea is Roman and he got no interest or intention of doing that if it mean we suffer on the field. Like many have already said, Cavani is at his peak right now unlike the previous 2 examples you said who were both going down hill. Two things - people want to see the club self-sufficient and healthy. Yes we have Roman but the guy has done more than enough for this club and I don't want us to have to be relient on him forever, which is why fiscal responsibility and the stadium are such key issues. Yes it's great now, but this club isn't just for us to enjoy. It's for the people who come after us. People before you and I fought to keep this club alive yet there are some people who are happy to run around like a madman with the credit card. The other point is about Cavani and his peak - if he's at his peak, then by definition the only way is down for him. We've actually spent the last couple of seasons buying players on their way up. It's been far more sensible in my opinion. gr123

And Lewandowski was only discovered because Dortmund couldn't afford any striker that are more expensive. Mandzukic was really bought as a back-up for Gomez and because he was injuried until new year, so it was only an unexpected success. Are you telling me you are willing to have Lukaku starting over Cavani just because Cavani cost a lot of money? And for your point about Drogba, yes we did but we only won 3 league titles, wonder why? 1 is because he was on fire, the other 2 was because of Jose's genius and we played shut-out football super effectively. That won't work anymore nowadays. We mostly won cups because he was always there to save us, now he is gone no one is stepping up.

We won the league with Drogba scoring less than a dozen goals (I know I'm repeating myself but it's important) because we had goals in other areas, and a solid defence. Getting a 20 goal-a-season striker isn't the only way to build a team capable of winning the league, especially when you have players like Hazard and Mata.
