Barcelona 2009-2012, Real Madrid 2014-2018, Bayern, City, and now Liverpool have all seen success due to how reliant they are on their full backs. I would argue our system more so than them rely on our fullbacks the most. There is a major risk Chilwell doesn't come back the same player. If Theo is available and wants to come, I say go all in as he can become an elite LWB. Not to mention as Vesper alluded to, he can play LCB as well. Yes, i'm aware about that situation but i can't say the same about our board. They will likely to wait and see what happen with Chilwell before sanctioning a big money for another left back. Milan could create a bidding war in the summer when City, Barcelona, Juventus, Newcastle, United, and PSG are looking for a new left back. Lyon is shit this year, 13th in the league, yet far above the relegation zone and have a game in hand (and could move up to 10th) no euro place race for them more than likely and they are not in great shape financially toss them some quid to break the loan and move on
chelsea_4_eva 1,182
I think, if there is zero chance of Digne coming just on loan, then we might go for Theo. I think the club are waiting on Evertons stance regarding Digne. He wants to play european football but we only want a loan so we'll see what happens

This is why, if we do attempt to sign a left sided defender this window, I want it to be someone slated to be the starter, not a backup. milka 3,394
Chelsea have approached Barcelona regarding defender Serginho Dest. They have asked about what it will take to land the American, with the Spanish side wanting no less than €20M. However, they are willing to negotiate. I'm not surprised Barca might be willing to negotiate downward. I've only seen YouTube highlights but I don't like what I see from this bloke at all. His M.O. features way too much in the way of flicks and tricks. Exactly the type of football played by people who think they are better than they really are. I've said before that the best performance I've ever seen was Bayern's demolition of our team at The Bridge. Zero flicks, zero tricks. Proper football played to an exceptionally high standard. Get the ball, protect the ball, move the ball, pass the ball with good weight, move to support the ball again and repeat. Beautiful football played by brilliant footballers. Dest is exactly the type of player I had in mind when I accused our decision makers of being too attracted to the shiny things over the solid, genuinely good things. @Vespercan send me a bill for use of her material if she likes but, for me, Dest is a hard pass. Pizy 18,903
Dest is certainly a player you’d buy on potential and hoping a top class coach like Tuchel can get the best out of. Being out of the current Barca chaos and into a more structured environment may also help. He’s so young still that I think he can only get better. Wouldn’t be my first choice but he would be miles better than seeing another few games of Pulisic or CHO or Azpi as a wingback. This feels like great agent work to me. Doesn't want to diminish the chance of a late career 'pension fund' move to Chelsea so, instead of letting it be known that his client doesn't fancy Chelsea, he produces a cover story.
