You're right that players aren't daft. Why would Guehi accept 200-250k pw at Chelsea when City is coming in with a higher offer and have injuries at LCB to cover?

We can sign a better CB with the same overhead costs of Guehi - 20m transfer fee and 300k wages (70-80m on a 5 year contract) - without blowing our wage structure. We can go for Murillo for example.

£300K PW absolutely blows out our wage structure. All our best players would rebel en masse. The only 4 players who we could FOR SURE get away paying that (without the team losing their shit) are Håland, Yamal, Mbappe, and Kane (Kane on a shorter term deal (3 or 4 years, as he is 32yo). Those 4 are the clear top 4 players on the planet ATM.

Now for the more speculative (in terms of team acceptance) players. We might, MIGHT be able to convince the rest of the team to accept us paying that 300K PW wage to:

1. The clear (IMHO) best CB on the planet, Bastoni. Maybe VVD on rep as well, but age will catch up. Plus maybe, MAYBE Gabriel Magalhães, William Saliba, Pau Cubarsí, Dean Huijsen, Josko Gvardiol, and/or Rúben Dias.

2. The clear best RB on the planet, Achraf Hakimi.

3. The clear best LB on the planet, Nuno Mendes.

4. The clear best GKer on the planet atm.. Cuntois (Donnarumma will eventually pass him up, and also would probably not cause a freak out). Not sure about Alisson, Kobel, Oblak, Ederson, Emi Martínez, and Diogo Costa. Maignan deffo not.

5. The following MFers: Pedri, Bellingham, Rice, Pedri, Federico Valverde, Jamal Musiala, João Neves, Vitinha, Morgan Rogers, Dominik Szoboszlai, and maybe, maybe Nicolò Barella still.

6. Maybe, maybe some of the following WC Wingers, much of it is due to their rep:

Vinicius Junior, Bukayo Saka, Michael Olise, Raphinha, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué, Kenan Yıldız, Rafael Leão, Nico Williams, Luis Díaz, Rodrygo, Bradley Barcola, and finally Mo Salah(?)

7. Finally, there are the 5 other TRULY WC CFs out there (there are only 8 on the planet, and 3 of the top 4 players listed above are CFs or, in Mbappe's case play CF atm) whom we could perhaps convinced the team to accept that wage (as we are pretty fucked at CF and the 8 are indeed truly WC):

Lautaro Martínez
Victor Osimhen
Robert Lewandowski (but only on a 2 year contract as he is 37yo).

Briefing going out again about a CB. But the descriptions of what we apparently want are pretty contradictory.

”Chelsea want a starting level, top class CB.” In other words a plug and play option. 

But then they link us to a 20 year old who plays for a small French club where he has made less than 1 whole season’s worth of appearances in his whole career thus far. 

I don’t care how highly rated Jérémy Jacquet may be, we don’t need another kid, ffs. We need a seasoned veteran who comes in and instantly elevates us.

Still in terms of the level of player and ability, its not exactly bad business. Compared to what we’ve signed for £2.5 billion for instance (a lot are “investments” as Boehly put it - that we will likely never see a return on in terms of getting our money’s worth ability wise).

And you’re saying average or not first team regulars. Reijnders, Cherki, Marmoush, Semenyo, Guehi… probably all comfortably good enough for our starting 11 or would be very good options off the bench (better than what we’ve got on the bench anyway). 

If we get a better CB at 70-80m than Guehi, we’d be doing well. It will be another u23 player, like Badiashile, like Fofana - who may be lower wages but no doubt will be a £50m upwards fee and a gamble. And one where not every top club is vying for because, we frankly do not have that pulling power & a wage structure thats going to hamper us.

You mentioned Murillo. Has 3 full seasons in the PL when this season ends, current contract to 2029, already links with multiple suitors in the PL (United, Liverpool, us going from what I’ve seen) as well as Real Madrid who were linked last summer IIRC. All likelihood thats going to be another £75m+ transfer fee, then again you’ve got wages… what will it be then if all those clubs are in the mix? Oh we can’t compete with Madrid, United, Liverpool, whomever wage wise so wait and move onto the next big one the next summer? Do the same again?

The top teams are buying when they’re strong. How many CBs have City signed in the past 3 windows for instance. Also Arsenal.

You can't compare Chelsea and City. Their revenue is much more + they're higher in the table. We sign Guehi for that wage, 4 of our top players will want raises or will want to leave. 

Marmoush is apparently on the way out and Reijnders and Cherki haven't been regular starters. 

Absolutely agree we need to buy CB but it doesn't have to be Guehi for stupid money. There will be lot of options - like Hincapie in the summer and Senesi or Van de Ven who wants to leave Spurs. Or one of the high rated young CBs like Ordonez.

It just sounds like the board didn't want to keep Maresca for that long but they gave him time due to the club world cup win.

Definitely one of the better young talents in Europe.    Wonder why Arsenal, Bayern are keen on getting him if he's not "impressive".

No doubt he’s a talent but for right now that’s all he looks like. We have numerous players of that same profile on our books, though. 

We need someone who is an instant and significant upgrade on who we have. Not a guy who could become elite 3 years from now.
