Also, honestly, when you are willing to spend 115m euros, there is not a question of who is on the market. There was not just Vlahovic, Haaland, Lukau or bust. We could have gotten Schick who has been making strides for year now. already has 18 BuLi goals again and played an immense. 115m would have gotten us anyone probably even salahexcept maybe 5 or 6 players on the planet. so surely it is not as if lukaku was the only choice.

At the time I said Haaland or no one. Keep one of Tammy/Giroud and give Broja a chance.

In hindsight, buying Chiesa and keeping Broja probably would of been the best decision.

We sold Morata to Alti with most of the money recouped, Sheva flopped but his failure was not predicted.

Most importantly my argument is based on how Lukaku was bad signing from beginning not in hindsight. Man U already made the mistake of signing him, few years later we reinforced the argument yeah he is not cut out for a top side in England.

Even if that’s how your argument is based, there are still plenty of players we signed who are easily much much worse signings than Lukaku.

Morata not working out was a bit gut wrenching after getting rid of Costa (although his career panned out badly after leaving here), AM looked like he potentially could have had everything you would want in a top modern day CF but turns out he was really only good at scoring with his head and he lacked any sort of personality and top player mentality .

Or given Abraham an opportunity, worst case scenario Tammy still will work hard without the ball and does not completely mess up your system. You are not 115m poorer and still peruse the big fish next summer.

Lukaku is the worst Chelsea signing ever, mainly because it was very predictable.

Exaggeration, big time. There is still time for it to be a success. Yes, he has not made the best headlines but for me he can still make a big contribution towards now and end of season. I still think he will end up around 15 league goals, possibly more who knows and still have the UCL and I still believe while he will have his inconsistencies, he will have big moments too. You would think the season is over if your are stating this is the worst signing ever. Let's wait until the season is actually done.

There may be worse players, but equally you had to be a complete mouth breather if you thought this wasn't going to happen prior to the transfer.

I mean, the guy spent two years at Utd doing exactly the same thing and a was similar at Everton too.

Unless you lived under a rock or believe that Conte is some sort of real life magician, this was a painfully obvious outcome.

They would if someone is willing to sent a decent offer.

I was going to mention that almost every player has their price, but we aren't in dire need or are after starters.

Or Isak before the huge release clause raise or Victor Osimhen (odds are high if we had him he would not have hurt his knee, as you would have changed time and place history) or even Lautaro (would have been cheaper than rom for sure, a lot cheaper, although I never really pushed for him at all tbh) I fell off DCL when Everton started talking £80-90m, he was worth a £40-50m punt max IMHO, and finally, the least of the lot, Youssef En-Nesyri.

Johnathan David was too young/inexperienced (although I did mention him on spec)

then there was (pipe dream) Mbappe, lolol ( I am joking kinda)

Lewa was floated by no way was he leaving

Håland was NOT worth the £335-350m toal cost plus that damn bullshit 'he can leave after 2, 3 years for same fee we paid + 10%' clause

That is every striker I talked about I do believe

Player wise yes there's been a lot worse, but add his ego, stylistic mismatch and off the pitch antics to the mix and i'm stuggling to think of a bigger net negative at this point, Torres is the only one that comes remotely close.

I'm guessing you weren't following the club when we broke our transfer record on Paul Furlong and then Chris Sutton.

Lukaku could fail to score for a year and then take an Inter flag and plant it in the centre circle of the Bridge and he still wouldn't touch those two.

Chris Sutton was HORRIFIC

with inflation factored, he cost us £16m per league goal he scored (ONE in 28 games)

insanity

We all live in a Robert Fleck world...............

3 goals in 40 league games

🤬

I was only around 6 years old when we bought him so my memories are fairly vivid, but I do remember my dad firing many expletives his way. I remember Mark Stein and John Spencer from that timeframe though so that can only highlight the (lack of) contribution of Robby Fleck.

Paul Furlong - I can remember going to a friendly Chelsea were playing away at one of my local teams. I think we had just signed Vialli and I was really hoping to see him, Gullit, Mark Hughes, etc and instead Chelsea rolled out pretty much a reserve/U21 side spearheaded by Paul Furlong and he was dreadful. We laugh at Lukaku's touch at times but this guy couldn't trap a bag of cement.

Chris Sutton - In my opinion we were one top striker away from winning the league. The season before we only finished 4 points off United's treble winning team and really threw our chances away in the last few games of the season. Ultimately though when Poyet went down injured we lost a huge goal threat. Things happen for a reason but I think if we had bought Hasselbaink a year earlier instead of Sutton we could have kicked on again that year. By the time we'd rectified the Sutton transfer with JFH, the team's peak had come and gone unfortunately.

I know Lukaku has been signed for £100m or so but it's all relative. These were huge fees paid at the time, especially for Chelsea and all were far greater disasters than Lukaku.

You are saying this in hindsight, but with Lukaku it was predictable.

Lukaku may very well go on to score a decent number of goals this season and if he stays on past this season he’ll score many more. He will actually contribute in a meaningful way despite his glaring weaknesses.

Kepa is the most expensive goalie ever and is nothing more than a cup and injury backup. But actually, I somehow completely forgot that Kepa was actually very solid in that first season here. He just gradually crumbled. There was a time there where he displaced DDG in the Spain XI and looked great.

So with that being said I’ll revise my pick. It’s Drinkwater. Paid £30m+ and he made like 2 appearances. The most “wait, did that actually happen?” transfer ever. We may as well have lit 30m on fire. 😂

I think Bogarde and Torres both are still by far the worst transfers we’ve ever done off the top of my head. Both for different reasons too.

I suppose Nando gets a little credit for that goal that made Gary Neville spunk his drawers on live TV v Barca at the Nou Camp and the one in the Europa League final v Benfica but other than that, he is by far the worst footballer I think I’ve ever seen play so regularly at any top club based on the majority of the first 18 months or 2 years he was here. Ok he still wasn’t good after that but those first 2 years he had, he was pish. Like everything he did - didn’t work bar the odd 10-15 minutes of looking like a reasonable level professional in a match every 4 months.

Then well Bogarde though, £40k a week, for 4 seasons in which he played maybe 10 times. We all know that story too well.

I think topping those 2 will be hard done, even considering everything re Lukaku. Even considering then the likes of Drinkwater, Bakayoko, etc. they would still struggle.

Kepa is far and away the worst signing in the clubs history. Nobody else comes close, really.

He's taken his reduced status well and knuckled down and made a difference where he can. Also the Europa alone puts him ahead of Rom as will the league cup if we win it unless Rom single handedly drags us home at Wembley (highly unlikely especially if it's Liverpool).

He absolutely has too. With his price tag combined with all the negatives he's bringing a goal a game average should be minimum requirement.

Kepa is not even bad signing yet alone worst. He is here three and half seasons and for two and a half he has been very good.

Best is yet to come. If somebody offers us 50m pounds for Kepa I would reject the offer.

Total 5 year gross cost of Drunkwater is over £65m (salary + fees)

🤬

Well, Kepa is pinnacle of panic buys, but I wouldn't call it the worst transfer.

Given the situation and economy at the time, yes, he was ridiculously expensive, club paid all sorts of premiums on him, but I don't recall anyone hyping him up as the best GK ever like in cases of Werner or Havertz.

Actually, I wonder what kind of scouting or analytics backed Kepa up, as his stats were so-so. Pressure was extraordinary and he actually did quite well at the start and then just fell apart, but remember he wasn't the only one in team to do so at the time. His mistakes were spectacular, loud, people were pissed of with him, but I wouldn't ever call him a worst transfer. And actually his doing decent job now, so there's still chance he will do good, it's just the expectations about this transfer are way too high for his boots.
