Edouard Mendy named Premier League Goalkeeper of the Season

https://www.sportsmole.co.uk/football/Chelsea/end-of-season-awards/news/edouard-mendy-named-premier-league-goalkeeper-of-the-season_448926.html

Chelsea's Edouard Mendy has fought off fierce competition from Emiliano Martinez and Ederson to win the Premier League Goalkeeper of the Season award in the annual Sports Mole Reader Awards.

Mendy only joined Chelsea in September, quickly usurping Kepa Arrizabalaga as number one and going on to keep 16 clean sheets during his debut Premier League campaign.

Only Manchester City's Ederson kept more clean sheets, but the Golden Gloves winner has to make do with third place, garnering 24% of your votes.

Aston Villa's Martinez kept 15 clean sheets and finished second in the voting, narrowly above Ederson with 24.6% of the votes.

However, both trailed Mendy, whose efforts to help earn Chelsea a top-four finish won him 29.3% of the votes.

Liverpool's Alisson Becker, who scored a crucial goal in the run-in, was fourth with 13.8% of the votes, while Kasper Schmeichel earned 8.4%.

PREMIER LEAGUE GOALKEEPER OF THE SEASON RESULTS

1. Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) - 29.3%
2. Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) - 24.6%
3. Ederson (Manchester City) - 24%
4. Alisson Becker (Liverpool) - 13.8%
5. Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City) - 8.4%

Mendy kept nine clean sheets in 12 games in this season's Champions League - no keeper has ever kept more in a single campaign in the competition (level with Santiago Canizares for Valencia in 2000-01 and Keylor Navas for Real Madrid in 2015-16).

His is one of the most touching stories here. 6 years ago he was living off jobless' allowance and now he is a Champions League winner. No wonder he was so moved. I was too. When he laid down on the ground covering his eyes. And how gracefully he first touched that trophy. Absolute chills.

One of the best performances i have seen from a Chelsea keeper for years. Probably outperformed his xG conceded by 2 or so today. That stop from watkins and the double save were amazing. a couple of other very smart stops on top of that. All hail Big Ed.

People need to stop the transfer talk about looking for a new keeper. He has been sublime ever since his Chelsea debut. He is a top 5 GK in the world, at bare minimum.

the main talk (at least from me) was about a better backup as Mendy goes to that fucking AFCON bollocks for a month or so

but we are stuck with Kepa

Oblak is the only remotely available keeper who is better than Mendy, and he is nearing the point were it makes zero sense to buy him, as he turns 30 years old right after the WC end next near, will cost £103m for his release clause, and will not come without a 7 year contact on £400K PW wages. At that age (or any age IMHO) he is NOT worth a quarter of a BILLION quid.

the only WC keepers atm are

Jan Oblak
Gianluigi Donnarumma
Thibaut Courtois
Alisson

Marc-André ter Stegen
Ederson

and you could make case for
Edouard Mendy

Another bizarre fact:

ALL in bold red will be 29 years old come January 7th, and Ederson will be 29 next summer.

PLUS the next one on my list, Emiliano Martínez, is 29 now too!

A bit lower down the list, Nick Pope, Alphonse Areola (in February), Koen Casteels, Mattia Perin (in 8 weeks), and Leno are or soon will be 29yo as well.

Neuer and Schmeichel would round out my top 10 and are coming towards the end of their peak years.

1992/93 (especially 1992) were insane years for keepers being born, of the top 8 atm, only Donnarumma was not born in either of the two.

Further fleshing out my Oblak comments, here the only keepers over 33yo on the planet who are still high quality (as in could start for us IF something happened to Mendy and they were on the team) IMHO

the drop off is STEEP, Buffon was a genetic freak

Has Neuer fallen off?

idk If anyone is better than Mendy as a pure GK, but guys like Ederson, Alisson, and Ter Stegen are very valuable for their ability on the ball.

i wouldn’t take Oblak or Courtois over Mendy.
