65 straight + 15 of bonus based on performance is very good deal for Bayern Leverkusen given also the current economic circumstances. They decline? Fair enough, let's move on. Let's splash this money on world-class left back and central defender instead.

Falk's update last night suggested this was just about done. Now this latest brief from some English reporters makes it sound as though this will continue to drag on for a while. Bayer digging their heels in, Chelsea trying to lower their asking price.

Basically nothing has changed...

But there is no need for Chelsea to hurry up is there? There is no competition for Havertz this summer and the club can surely take some time to get a better value on the deal now that they know Havertz is keen to move and is pushing Leverkusen to finish negotiations.

But is it best for clubs to get this done ASAP? Leverkusen can then focus on buying replacements with the money. Havertz can then get here quicker and settle in and we can then move on to defensive signings!

Would be ideal. But I hope this forum got its Havertz update fix for the next few days at least

Is it that good though? In pre-COVID circumstances Leverkusen's asking price was €120M so a 33% discount with some of the fee even tied to bonuses doesn't exactly scream instant sell to me. They've been adamant since around May that they still want €100M and they're well within their rights to demand that, even in the pandemic circumstances.

Of course if they don't sell now, they're risking Bayern München getting him for €50M next year and Leverkusen having to endure +10 years of Havertz spanking them in the Bundesliga so finding a solution now benefits both clubs. But saying they should accept a deal that heavily favors the buying club is just arrogant thinking. Marina stood firm on Hazard's asking price last year and got a wonderful deal in the end so Leverkusen have every right to demand a good amount for their most valuable asset too.

I haven't been this obsessed/engaged in a transfer target in ages. Maybe since we were after Neymar before he went to Barca.

Probably because we as a club don't usually target players in the very top, mega expensive bracket like this. The Kepa panic buy apart we normally go to the £50-55m mark at the max.

It's awesome to see us in the position to (hopefully) pull off a massive deal like this.

The guy is not just worth 100m. That amount is crazy. And it is very risky. Look at the consequences for Real and Barca for similar deals. Besides, our main issue lies with the defense.

Telegraph - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/08/19/chelsea-close-kai-havertz-signing-players-valuation-remains/

Quote

Kai Havertz will join Chelsea on a five-year deal if the club can this week iron out an £18 million gulf between their valuation of the attacking midfielder and Bayer Leverkusen's.

Marina Granovskaia, Chelsea's director, is in advanced talks with Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Völler and chief executive Fernando Carro.

Chelsea had hoped to get a deal agreed for the player prior to pre-season preparations for the 21-year-old, who has encouraged both clubs to let him pursue his "dream".

Leverkusen are also keen to reach a resolution of sorts this week to avoid the saga affecting their preparations for the new Bundesliga season next month. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have  previously approached Havertz, a German international who is regarded as one of the best young talents in Europe.

It'll probably be 80m euros and 20 in add ons as suggetsed elsewhere.  Those add-ons will be easily achievable ones so that Bayer will get their 100m one way or another.

Probably be something like 2million if Chelsea get top 4 at any point during his 5 year contract.  Another 2million if Havertz plays a certain amount of games in his first season.   And then for each year of his 5 year deal, say in the June of each year, Leverkusen get another 4m

Many creative ways of making up the add ons

Who decides what a player is worth?

For example going by Transfermarkt values Havertz is ranked 12th most valuable player in the world. Ahead of him in their listings are only Mbappe, Sterling, Neymar, Mane, Salah, Kane, KDB, Sancho, Messi, TAA and Griezmann which to me sounds fair enough.

On that site Joao Felix is tied with Havertz at €81M valuation and he moved for €126M last year. Havertz is probably considered better than Felix so Leverkusen have every right to demand silly money for him, not just for his current level of ability but the huge potential too. Whether it's a good idea for Chelsea to pay €100M for him is a whole other matter and probably depends on how big the club's total transfer budget is. If the club still consider deals for defensive reinforcements to be financially viable even after spending a lot of money on Havertz I say go for it.

It's not money straight out of my own pocket and it would be really exciting to see the club sign one of the highest rated young players in the world. The board clearly know the defense needs additions too and going by reports they're not done with the market after potentially signing Havertz so as long as that happens too I don't really care whether the fee for Havertz ends up being €80M or €100M. And it could be that a big part of that difference will be made up via add-ons so it shouldn't impact this window's budget too much.
