These comparisions are pointless IMO. How do you compare Thiago Silva who is active to Baresi who played in the 1980-90s? Based on what?

that's a cherry-pick

Maldini played until 2009 and Nesta until 2014

and Baresi, a 3 time CL/EC winner and 2 time world champion, was playing in what was the toughest league on the planet for most of his career, and on some of the best teams ever in football history

Thiago is a superb CB, on of the top 15 (probably top 10) in last the last 20 years, but I would take any of those 3 over him

No direspect to Silva, but Nesta Maldini, and Baresi were on whole another level.

Hard to compare players of different eras, just simply because the game has changed so much, impossible to say the older greats would even have half the impact in the modern game.

Yes, I got this, what I meant that times are changing.. It’s like comparing Messi to Maradona. The latter ruled football with big belly while doing coke, ofc nowadays it can’t happen. Have to put everything in context.

You could make an argument about Baresi, but Nesta and Maldini already played in the modern game. Are you also going to say the likes of Stam, Carvalho, Ferdinand, Vidic, Cannavaro, Lucio, and Puyol wouldn't have half the impact today?

I am agreeing all sport change in 30 years an 18 year old Steffi Graf would not win a game against Emma Rad.

I think Vidic would have a lot of trouble today. Basically like Zouma.

Vidic would only have a lot of trouble in a possession based football. Place Vidic in correct system like Juve/Atletico and he would be a monster.

What I am saying is its impossible to know because we will never find out.

He looks sharp af. Two outstanding PL performances back to back. He was out against Spurs fastest player - son- and shepherd him wide. For the goal he comfortably outjumped Ali a player 5cm taller and 13 years younger . Maybe he even has another world class year in him. Surely still has the fitness

Could not cope with the quickness of city players. Hope it’s just early season form, but looked his age against city, I have to say.

you know reading some posts today made me convinced I literally watched a different game. We actually played way better than city instead of been pinned down in our own half for most of the match. And we actually won! Silly me again.

Some rumours he wants to stay in Europe one more season so would make sense for us to keep him here, even more so with question marks over a number of defender's futures.

PSG must be kicking themselves every day that they gift wrapped Silva and then Tuchel to us.
