I think people are worried because players who heavily rely on athletic qualities are susceptible to major declines after big injuries even in their prime years.

We ourselves have seen it with Essien and Torres at a similar age Rudi is now.

of course, but Rudiger has had nothing remotely close to that level of repetitive and severe injury pattern that Essien had

and those dotards on Twitter were not even using injuries as a point of focus

True, but a different manager and very different tactics with a low block, good defensive cover with Kante-matic ahead of the CBs. 

Problem is when people said things like Zouma should be sold ahead of Rudiger, despsite Rudi being an absolute disaster last season and zouma being our best CB.

I always said from the beginning that he does not have the abilities to become world class because he lacks natural defending abilities. His all round game is based on athleticism. He started playing as a CB when he was 16 or 17 years old. Prior to that he was a striker. So he clearly never developt those natural defending insticts that is required for positioning and defensive football IQ. I never understood why Chelsea fans claimed he was WC. In Germany, he makes one mistake after another and that is not only since 2020. He is a very clumsy defender.
In a back 4, he is more or less useless. In a back three, he might have a future.

How close did he come to leaving Chelsea?

“Naturally, I looked at a couple of options in the two weeks before the end of the transfer window,” he said.

“There was a possibility of a loan deal, in order for me to get more game time. Due to many different reasons and the shortage of time, nothing materialised in the end.”

Did Chelsea really want to move him on?
Rudiger has been a peripheral figure for Chelsea this season and The Athletic understands that Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma and Barcelona all expressed some form of interest in the defender during the transfer window.

But Rudiger claims Chelsea were not determined to push him out of the club.

“The club didn’t tell me that it was absolutely necessary for me to find a new club and that they definitely didn’t have me in their plans for the next few months,” he said.

“I also turned down one or two options myself. I wasn’t prepared to pack it all in simply because I had been left out a few times. I enjoy living in London and like being at Chelsea.”

What does Rudiger’s future hold?
Rudiger is hopeful that Chelsea’s cramped calendar will afford him a chance to come back into the fold.

But he also hinted at his need to move on if he keeps being frozen out.

“It is what it is now. I will accept it for the time being and try to show myself in every training session. We are in many different competitions, it’s two games per week all the way from now.

“Sometimes in football, things can change very quickly. That’s why I will continue to give my best every day and try to convince the manager.”

Chelsea return to Premier League action with a home match against Southampton on Saturday evening.

Commendable attitude. I never doubted his professionalism and he is a popular guy. He can help the squad just not on the pitchcos without any injuries he is hopefully not gonna play.

Additionally to being the 5th CB he can also play RB. Maybe if one of Azpi/RJ is injured and the other has to cover for another position he can be shoehorned in that RB spot. He has the athleticism for it and i have seen him hit decent crosses before.not a good dribbler tho

According to David Ornstein, the club told interested parties in the summer that they wanted a £5 million loan fee plus full coverage of the wages - believed to be around £150k per week - for a loan deal for Rudiger. Everton, Spurs, AC Milan, Inter, Roma and Barcelona all expressed some form of interest.

Antonio Rudiger held constructive talks with Frank Lampard about his recall to the Chelsea squad at the weekend and hopes to be given a chance to prove he can resurrect his career at the club.

German international Rudiger had been left out of Lampard’s matchday squads since the opening Premier League victory over Brighton and almost left Chelsea during the summer transfer window.

Having seen a potential loan move to Tottenham Hotspur fail to materialise, Rudiger was still named in Chelsea’s Champions League and Premier League squads, and he was on the 12-man substitutes’ bench for the draw with Sevilla.

But, following positive talks with Lampard, Rudiger was also one of Chelsea’s seven substitutes for the goalless Premier League draw at Manchester United and the 27-year-old has vowed to do everything in his power to try to force his way back into the team.

Telegraph Sport understands Rudiger has trained well since returning from international duty with Germany and that he has attempted to remain positive around Chelsea’s Cobham training base.

Lampard has five senior centre-backs at the club, together with captain Cesar Azpilicueta who started as part of Chelsea’s back three against United. Both Andreas Christensen and Fikayo Tomori missed out on places on the bench.

Chelsea travel to Russia to face Krasnodar in the Champions League on Wednesday night for a game that Lampard will consider making some changes to his team.

It remains to be seen whether or not 36-year-old Thiago Silva can play three games in a week in the middle of such a busy schedule, while Kurt Zouma has started every game since the 3-3 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Should Lampard decide to rest one of his first-choice centre-backs in Russia, then Rudiger may get a chance to make his first Chelsea appearance of the season.

Rudiger will reassess his situation again in January, but now hopes to get enough opportunities to remain with Chelsea until the end of the season when he will have only one year remaining on his contract.

Chelsea had wanted Rudiger to extend his current deal to go on loan in the last transfer window, but talks between his representatives and the club never got off the ground.

Rudiger knows he cannot sit in the stands or on the bench all season if he wants to play in next summer’s European Championships for Germany, but believes he will be granted more playing time over the coming weeks.
