Lol, I have been saying for weeks. Play alonso, if you have to protect him with Willian or Pedro do that. We are really lacking goal threat right now, alonso is one of our player who can attack the box.

Lol, of course it will come to end but I don't think you realize that we have problem scoring for weeks now. That is a fact. 

How do you fix that? Add goal threat, alonso is one of them. He is bad defensively, so protect him with Pedro or Willian.

We won't be signing two new LBs next summer so one will remain at back up, I'd rather Marcos than Emerson for that particular role everyday of the week.

I have always been a big supporter of Alonso.  Yes, I get that due to him being slow he is a real issue in a back 4 but when we play 343 or 351 (which for me is also our best fit formation with the current squad) he is normally very good and more dangerous than most of our AM's. 

As for things moving forward, I rather see him playing than Emerson or Dave in the lb/lwb role. As for the Summer we obviously need a LB and Telles is looking primed, however Emerson has surely got to be the first guy to go as he has been awful. After that, I would keep Alonso to be LB2 as he would provide depth and give us flexibility to play the 343. However, if a good offer does come in and we can get Telles, I can see the club thinking we'll promote one of the young boys and have Dave cover both LB/RB behind James and Telles.

I did not do update in a few months: 

Alonso starting in the PL: 

Games 11 won 10 draw 1 loses 0 Only draw came against Bournemouth 2:2 when he scored twice so not his fault he was let down by others.

Without Alonso:

20 6 5 9

This is with all the games. Even the ones when he came from the bench like Liverpool and Norwich.

I think he is not muscular enough to be explosive and also that he does not really even try to go full Sprint very often, he covers an immense amount of ground so probably just not enough stamina to bust out a proper sprint.

Yes most of his defensive problems stem from his pace, his ridiculous desire to play left wing when we are in the opposition half (and so is fucked when we get countered) with brain fart tackles.

Slow, gung ho attack leaves space behind and brain farts.

Outside of that though hes clearly our best left back. When hes focused he does well enough in the big games. Theres plenty of big games where hes far from a defensive liability. Even at United, city and liverpool. Good in the air too.

His major problem is consistency.

Got more Disciplined under Lamps. Did not go forward needlessly and only got outpaced despite being constantly run at by Mahrez and Sterling.

He will turn 30 between the years tho, we should definitely aim at selling him this summer.

He is apparently on £110k a week or something. If that is true, he is not being sold as no one will give him that unless we give him away. For me, the Summer deal to do at LB is to sell Emerson and buy Telles.

One of our most stupid ever decisions giving him that contract. Emerson at least is just 25. But I could still see Barca or an Italian club being dumb enough to take him off us.
I don’t really understand tho why we needlessly hand out contracts this big for players who are so out of their depth here that they would most probably sign for less.
