The Mourinho Thread

Interesting move for Mourinho but also a good one for him and Roma I would think. Reunites him with players he’s worked with before such as Smalling, Pedro, Santon and Mkhitaryan.

Roma have underachieved this season for definite after last year and Serie A suits his style and management more now than ever I think. Plus their aims aren’t going to he winning Scuedettos or anything immediately so punching above their weight getting into the top 4 will be a more realistic goal and certainly one which is a possibility, will be interesting for sure. Conte, Mourinho and maybe Allegri in the same league it Juve reappoint him?

Interesting. I thought Jose was going to give it a shot for the Juventus job since Pirlo is close to being sacked. Roma doesn't feel like a big enough club like the ones Jose is usually interested in managing, but probably with his recent failures his stocks have dropped and that's about the best he can do at this point.

Jose Mourinho admits players he has coached 'may think I'm a bastard' due to how direct he is and claims he's 'a victim of my own success' as he reflects on his coaching career ahead of taking over at Roma

Mourinho was recently announced as the new AS Roma manager after touching down in Italy

Jose Mourinho says he has been a 'victim of his own success' and that he hasn't been given the same leeway that other coaches have.

The former Tottenham and Manchester United manager has also said that his players may view his as a 'bastard' due to his direct approach.

However, he insists honesty is the best policy when managing a team - even if it leads to rocky relationships, as seen with Dele Alli and Luke Shaw.

When speaking about his book titled 'Mantenham-se Loucos e Famintos' - or 'Stay Crazy and Hungry' in English - Mourinho said: 'I've been a victim of myself and, if I could, it would be one of the things I wouldn't repeat.

'I won, won and won and I entered into a kind of dynamic where not winning seemed like the end of the world.

'I, myself, because of my personality, made out that the training, the games and the job were all to win, win, win ... and then, when I came to situations where it was very difficult to win, which for other coaches is something acceptable, in my case it was never enough.

'Not winning was a failure, but that isn't true. I always tell the players that, with me, they'll find an honest guy.

'They'll find a guy who will tell you the truth, the things you want to hear and also the things you don't.

'Some may say that I'm a bad coach, that I was a bastard, but no one can say that I wasn't serious or honest.'

Alli fell out of favour under Mourinho and endured the most challenging period of his career.

Alli played just 15 times in the Premier League during the 2020-21 season and thought about leaving the club in the January transfer window.

Mourinho's relationship with Alli was captured on Amazon's All or Nothing documentary.

The Portuguese manager was heard shouting 'you are fucking lazy' to Alli during training. He. then added: 'I'm going to be a pain in the arse on you, and you are lucky. You are lucky, because when I am a pain in the arse it is a good thing.'

Mourinho also shamed Alli in front of his team-mates saying: 'I understood already that you are a fucking lazy guy in training.'

Shaw and Mourinho have also had a rocky relationship dating back from when the Portuguese manager was in charge at Old Trafford.

The pair also came to blows more recently Mourinho said Shaw's set-piece taking for England was 'dramatically bad.'

To which he responded on Twitter saying: 'He continuously talks about me, which I find quite strange. Even some of the lads have said 'What's his problem?' and 'Why does he keep talking?'

'He just needs to move on. Hopefully he can find his peace with that and finally move on and stop worrying about me. Clearly I am in his head a lot and he clearly thinks about me a lot.'

He also said: 'Maybe, inside, you are telling me to fuck off, but I have to tell you exactly what I see.

'I have no doubts about your potential. I saw you do incredible things in incredible matches. But I always felt that you had ups and downs.'

Mourinho was recently announced as the new AS Roma manager after touching down in Italy.

The Portuguese coach, 58, received his marching orders from Tottenham in April after turgid campaign saw them crash out of the Europa League and fall short of challenging for a top four finish.

Mourinho found work weeks after his Spurs dismissal, taking on a new challenge with the Serie A side and has spent his summer in London where he has taken up punditry duties with talkSPORT.

However, now the ex-Chelsea and Manchester United boss is ready to get back in the hotseat for the coming campaign.

Curious how he will do it in La Citta Eterna.

He got nice backing from new owners. Around 100m after Abraham.

Can he challenge the big boys? Inter lost Don Antonio and some great players, Juve got no one...

Interesting team...

GK Patricio, Olsen

CB Mancini, Ibanez, Smolling, Kumbulla

FB Spinazzola (injured), Florenzi (may leave), Karsdrop, Vina, Calafiori and Reynolds (very talented)

MF Pellegrini and Cristante sure starters plus Diawara, Villar, Veretout. Zaniolo is back for that AM role.

Wingers Mkhi and El Shaarawy plus Perez.

Strikers Abraham, Mayoral and new guy from Uzbekistan.

You can make solid starting 11 of that squad.
