English Freak 456
I'm just glad Cole is staying for another season.Bertrand just doesn't look ready to replace Cole yet...
Bir_CFC 3,455
Cole needs some rest. He plays one 7-8/10 then a 5-6/10. Very inconsistent this season. We should play Bertrand more often, especially the Europa League and what not, keep Cole for the PL.
Leif 6,006
After seeing Cole return to form (for the most part) recently, it's really evident just how much of a chasm is between Cole & Bertrand's natural talents. When deployed on the wing, Bertrand whips in a decent cross. But when deployed at left back, Bertrand seems too scared to actually wander up and get himself into that position like Cole so often does. I'm still adamant that Shaw is the only player we should consider getting in to replace Ashley. Yes he's young, but so what? He's great! I also like the fact we've typically had English left-backs. Le Saux, Bridge, Cole. When I look at Shaw, I just see a child version of Ashley Cole. The way they play is so similar. Shaw arriving would have me feeling much more optimistic about the future. With that said though, I doubt any player we ever buy will be a better left back than Ashley, meaning regardless who we pick up it'll be a downgrade of sorts. The amount of goal-line clearances Cole has produced for us right in our time of need are crazy.

What you've described in his flaws, as a left-back, can be something that's easily improved the more he's allowed to play at left-back. We've seen him play left midfield and wing so much that people do often forget that he's actually a good defender. Bertrand will only pick up that instinct of when to/when not to go forward the more experience he picks up there.
Jase 43,479
Benitez has said he will be out for 2 weeks or so after picking up the hamstring today. Will miss games against Rubin Kazan(Home & Away), Sunderland(H), Man City(N) and Fulham(A) at the very least.

Leif 6,006
Meh. We'll cope. Bertrand rarely looks below average when at left-back and he performed just fine today. xPetrCechx

Could've been worse, I guess.

BlueLion. 21,491
Just means we'll see Paulo on the bench a little more often as an auxiliary left full-back.
