Sky Sports News understands Chelsea are in talks with the representatives of Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Chelsea are homing in on their new manager after sacking Avram Grant less than two weeks ago after just eight months in charge.

The Premier League runners-up are understood to have narrowed down their short list for the job to two names.

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes, who is also interesting Manchester City, is one of the Blues' targets to replace Grant.

The other contender is an overseas coach and it appears Chelsea have made a renewed attempt to prise Ancelotti away from the San Siro.

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani revealed at the weekend that the club had turned down Chelsea's request to hold talks with Ancelotti.

However, Sky Sports News understands that the Blues are meeting with Ancelotti's representatives to discuss the possibility of taking charge at Stamford Bridge.

Sven Goran Eriksson, Frank Rijkaard, Guus Hiddink, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Roberto Mancini are among the names to have been linked with the Chelsea position, but it now seems to be a straight fight between Hughes and Ancelotti for the job.

Blackburn have confirmed they have agreed a compensation package with Manchester City for manager Mark Hughes.

Having parted company with Sven Goran Eriksson on Monday, City have wasted little time in identifying Hughes as the man to succeed the Swede.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra was granted permission by Blackburn to hold discussions with Hughes on Monday.

And Thaksin has now reached an agreement with Blackburn for Hughes, who is also understood to be a target of managerless Chelsea.

A statement on Blackburn's official website read: "Blackburn Rovers can confirm that they have reached an agreement with Manchester City on compensation terms for Mark Hughes."

The former Wales boss - who took over at Blackburn in 2004 - is understood to have until Wednesday to decide upon his future, but it is not believed that he has yet held talks with Thaksin.

Meanwhile, City have confirmed that Hans Backe and Tord Grip have left their posts as assistant manager and first-team coach, respectively, in the wake of Eriksson's departure.

Chief executive Alistair Mackintosh told City's official website: "Both Hans and Tord made a positive impact on those involved with Manchester City over the course of the season.

"We thank them for their contribution and wish them every success in the future."

Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out a move to Chelsea insisting he wants to stay at Milan for 'many years to come', while the West London club deny approaching him or Milan.

Chelsea were reported to have agreed a deal with advisors of Ancelotti on Tuesday afternoon, but the Milan chief, who has twice won the Champions League with the Rossoneri, insists he wants to remain at the San Siro.
