Conte is not stupid If Fabregas is not playing from the start means that it is not ready physically to play 90 minutes ;) Play with Fabregas(as Pirlo 2.0) involves building the midfield around him with Kante and Matic to do all the dirty work.

He has weakness defending but because of the number of people in attack that can't pass or control a ball, we have to shoehorn him into the side and hope no one takes advantage of his deficiencies. Especially against smaller teams.

What a player. That's a world class player indeed. You just give him the chance and he takes it like it's nothing. Brings attention to your eye even for 10 minutes, it's enough for him.
He is really useful in matches like this, but if we are playing against a team who are pressing high, he won't find a place. Conte is smart enough and knows well when to play him, amazig sub today.

Brilliant attitude on display from Cesc. Hasn't dropped his head or attitude in spite of being dropped from the starting XI, Conte doesn't seem to have any sort of problem with him either. Fabulous assist to Costa, that Fabregas-Costa combination is one of our most underutilised weapon lately but this shows what Fabregas can do when he's got time on the ball and space.

The fundamental problem is that last part, when he's afforded time and space. The reason he's not starting is his inability to stay within the game when the pace is increased and when there's someone marking him on the pitch. However a situation like today, coming off the bench relatively fresh (in comparison to the opposition) and being allowed to play the killer pass we know he's capable of.

At the age of 29 I wouldn't say he's an old man who can't learn to adapt, but he's going to have to make many alterations to the way he plays before he's starting under Conte regularly - But at least he's not giving up in his persuit of doing so. Displays like today will only make Conte trust him even more.

Also, I know that 'time and space' are always used together, but in the case of Fabregas the argument that he needs time is just nonsensical when he more often than not plays his passes first time. I mean our other option in midfield usually takes about 5 seconds and 2 or 3 touches to set the ball onto his left foot before he could make a 10 yard pass!

Yeah I get you,  but in this context I meant time to get into the game and space to play the ball into. Rather than he get closed down and bullied in midfield as usual, he was allowed to actually scope what was ahead of him before he'd even made the interception. It was a simple look to see the space he could play the ball into and open up their defence. Fair enough Watford's defending wasn't good for that goal, but Cesc grabbed the opportunity to play it in.
