As for Mata, whenever he was deployed on the left, he ended up playing a more central position leaving the opposition RB to roam as he wishes. On the counter, Mata on the left always passes back because he does not have the pace to beat any fullback.

Two things to consider however. Firstly Hazard is a much more explosive, dribbling type player than Mata, and I believe those attributes are better served when playing outside where you can isolate a full back and stretch teams.

Secondly, Mata was clearly our one creative outlet last season. Any team with a brain could see that if they stopped Mata they could stop a lot that was good with our play and the chances we could create. Robbie put him in the middle to try and get him on the ball more in the hope to create more chances but in turn in meant less space for him to operate in, particularly if teams 'focused' on him. However the semi against Spurs was proof of what he can do in the middle when given time and space - he destroyed them. IMO he will have more space next season because teams cannot focus on just him when he is being flanked by Hulk (hopefully) and Hazard, who themselves will create problems if not given the necessary attention.

I completely disagree. First, I'm as happy about the Hazard signing as any other Chelsea fan, but we are yet to see how good he really is. Just because he was excellent at Lille does not mean that he will replicate this form here. I've had the chance to watch 15 odd Lille games off my mates hard drive who is a huge fan, and the kid is most definitely better. He controls the game, and has such a huge presence throughout the course. I think a lot of people will be hugely surprised when they watch him. It's as if he is everywhere.

I disagree about Mata defensively. He showed in the Barca match he was more than capable, actually being one of our better ones. I just don't think he had the energy to be doing both with our lack of attacking prowess last season. This season it shouldn't be a problem and he can focus more on both.

It's just my opinion, but I'd rather have our better and quicker player in the middle who can break it open.

many things being said regarding where he will play but i think he will be on the left of the 3 because we already have the number 10 and Hazard is better out wide than Mata is. We needed 2 wide men and Hazard was bought is one of them. If we get Hulk too, then suddenly we have 2 players who can play up front, out wide or behind the striker. In todays football, versatility is huge.

Mata, Hulk and Hazard can all play anywhere. We have Ivanovic who can play CB & RB and Ramires who can play in the defensive roles or attacking. We'll be a very good, unpredictable team next season i hope. It's gonna be interesting! Might take a year tho so i hope any new manager is given at least 3 years to get the best out of the team.
