Thiago is an excellent signing and adds something creatively that the Liverpool midfield lacks which is almost purely built on a workmanlike mentality to help the front three and full backs flourish.

It will be interesting how important Firmino remains with this. Is his ability to drop deep and link the player still needed with this purchase, and if not he may come under much more scrutiny for the lack of consistency he has as a goalscorer.

I'm still amazed they passed up the opportunity to buy Werner. I understand the current economic situation regarding Covid but they haven't really spent anything for the last 2 summers and won trophies in that time, surely the money was there to add a couple of players and in particular when Werner was so reasonably priced.

However the one thing to note about the Thiago signing is he's 30 years old in about 6 months time. Perhaps there is a mentality there to add on what they have now and win as much as they can over the next couple of seasons but the team isn't getting any younger with this signing. It reminds me of the Chelsea team at the start of the decade. It had been left to grow old together and whilst we still won trophies, it reached a point where we had to replace a number of key players all within the space of a year or two. Liverpool if they're not careful will find themselves in the same position because Van Dijk, the entire first choice midfield and front line are all of a similar age within a year or two of each other. They are in their prime now, but we've seen ourselves how quick that prime can drop off suddenly.

Though the move has been the subject of speculation for months (“I never answer these kinds of questions,” tooted Jürgen Klopp when asked about the prospect in July; “it is nice that we are linked with him … because he is a good player and Liverpool is a big club, so that is nice,” he added last week) the speed at which the deal was concluded caught many people off guard, perhaps most of all the one-time German international and former Bayern president Uli Hoeness, who on Sunday accused Liverpool of “trying to blackmail us by waiting until the last week when they’re going to make a cheap offer” [again, say it ain’t so, Uli – Fiver Ed]. How wrong could you be? In fact they would be making a cheap offer pretty much straight away. Though reports differ, word is that Bayern have accepted an initial £20m – 0.4 Ben Chilwells, if you like, or 0.7 Ollie Watkinses – for the 29-year-old and have additionally allowed Liverpool to pay it off in instalments. So, as Klopp might say, that is nice.

This is the kind of signing that is sometimes described as a game-changer, though given what Liverpool did to the league last season, the best they can hope for is a game-maintainer. Thiago is certainly the calibre of player that will inspire wild jealousy in Liverpool’s rivals. Talking of which, on Sunday Hoeness also said that Thiago “obviously has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United or both”, conjuring the delicious if far-fetched image of a player attempting to simultaneously represent two great adversaries. As Hoeness should know, such is those clubs’ enmity that anyone wanting to have a simultaneous agreement with both requires such a massive sweetener that the only company to manage it so far is Cadbury’s, who became the champions’ “first official global chocolate partner” this month, having come to a similar agreement with Old Trafford’s suits earlier in the year. The Fiver would very much like to have a chocolate partner, but for practical reasons has had to make do with a more traditional imaginary one.

Thiago is an annoyingly fantastic signing for Liverpool and one who makes them easily the heavy title favorite. If they weren't already. Can see them performing similarly to last season where they only lose a few times the whole year assuming they stay fit. He adds a new dimension to their team and allows them to play in a different way.

I'm just glad he went to a team that's already dominant rather than United who he would've taken up several levels.

Need to have some clubs come in for some Dippers.

Its easy tho once you have a machine thats working just to upgrade a worn position here n there. Hopefully once we get our machine gelled we can also do that.
